No one knew how long they kissed. All Emmy knew was her lungs were burning and she was lightheaded by the time James finally let her come up for air.
He barely pulled away before leaning in again, trailing slow, gentle kisses along her lips, like he couldn’t bear to let her go.
When he’d finally had his fill, James lifted her up a little more and perched her on the cabinet by the front door. Emmy sat there, legs draped around his waist, still clinging to him without even thinking.
James stood between her knees and only then started to shrug off his coat. His voice was deep and rough. “I don’t know what it is, but I missed you so much today.”
Emmy smiled, running her fingers through his hair that the wind had left a little messy. “Why don’t you take me with you to work tomorrow?”
James grinned. “I’d never get anything done if you were there.” He tossed his jacket toward the coat rack without even glancing, and Emmy watched, surprised, as it landed perfectly.
He scooped her off the cabinet. With one hand, he grabbed the stuff that was sitting on top and took her hand with the other, leading her into the living room. He handed her two bags of snacks and kept the bouquet of roses for himself, heading off to find a vase.
He set the flowers on the corner of her desk in the study. Emmy followed, arms full of snacks, and teased, “Since when did you get so romantic?”
James looked back at her, his eyes soft. “You’re at a special stage right now. I just want you happy all the time. So, what do you think? Do you like the flowers?”
Emmy’s eyes lit up. “I love them.” The warmth in her chest made her want to kiss him, so she went up on her tiptoes, aiming for his cheek.
She missed. Her lips landed on his jaw instead, where his stubble scratched her a little.
Emmy wrinkled her nose, rubbing his chin. “You need a shave. This grew fast.”
James laughed low, his breath warm as he leaned in. “Did I poke you?” His voice was rough and teasing. “Want me to kiss it better?”
