As soon as they were out of sight, Mandy leaned in, her voice low and tinged with jealousy. “Seriously, what kind of luck does Emmy have?”
“She gets dumped by Mr. Sparrow, then turns around and marries a guy that hot? Did you see him? He looks way too much like Mr. Nelson.”
Isabel watched the couple disappear into the crowd, her tone soft and thoughtful. “Mandy, do you think… maybe that man actually is Mr. Nelson?”
“No way.” Mandy shook her head right away, looking almost offended by the idea.
“Do you know who Mr. Nelson is? There’s no chance he’d show up in a place like this, hanging around with Emmy like he’s her bodyguard.”
“And besides, why would he even notice Emmy? She’s just someone Mr. Sparrow got bored with. Nothing special.”
Mandy scoffed, her contempt growing with each word. “The Nelson family would never even consider someone like her. Ten Emmys couldn’t get past their front gate.”
Isabel just smiled a little. “But didn’t you hear? People are saying Mr. Nelson got married out of nowhere about six months ago. They say he married a girl who just graduated college.”
“And Emmy just graduated this year, didn’t she? She’s even talking about grad school.”
Mandy hesitated, but then her face lit up with a new argument. “Even if he married a college student, it would be someone with a family background that matches his. Someone like you, Isabel. Not Emmy.”
“She’s just the daughter of some small-time rich guy. There are tons of girls like her in the capital. Mr. Nelson could have anyone he wants. He’d never pick her.”
Mandy let out a laugh. “And anyway, haven’t you heard? Emmy’s husband is a firefighter. Did you see his build? The way he carries himself? He definitely looks like someone who spends his days hauling hoses, not sitting in a boardroom.”
Isabel grinned. “But aren’t the Sullivans related to the Nelsons by marriage? This guy’s last name is Ji, too. Maybe he’s a distant cousin of yours.”
Mandy looked disgusted. “Please. I don’t have relatives like that.”
She made up her mind, sounding certain. “If he’s got the Nelson family’s face but not the background, he must be from some forgotten branch of the family. Just a pretty face, nothing more.”
A strange light flickered in Isabel’s eyes, but she kept quiet after that.
On the other side of the crowd, Emmy tugged James along until they finally squeezed up to the front.
In the center, a man in a short jacket was making a monkey in a red vest bow and do flips.
The monkey was clever, sometimes climbing onto the man’s head, sometimes scratching and making silly faces that had everyone laughing out loud.
Emmy had only ever seen this kind of thing in short videos online. Seeing it in real life for the first time was so much more fun, and she couldn’t stop watching.
She turned around, excited, about to call her mom over to see too.
