Emmy spun around, her brows drawn tight. “Dean, can you not ruin our alone time?”
James stepped in front of her, his stare cold and unyielding. “Mr. Sparrow, the path’s wide enough. Why don’t you go around?”
Dean glanced between them, then fiddled with the scarf at his neck, as if he was trying to say something without words. His eyes drifted to the strip of bare skin at James’s neck, peeking out above his sweater. Suddenly, Dean grinned, the kind of smug, challenging smile that made James grit his teeth.
James narrowed his eyes, a wave of irritation hitting him so fast he had to fight the urge to throw a punch. Emmy caught his arm and tugged him away, not willing to give Dean another second of their time.
Dean didn’t follow this time, but he trailed behind, just far enough to keep them in sight.
Teresa caught up, her steps measured and calm, and called out, “Mr. Sparrow.”
Her voice was gentle, but she carried herself with the authority of someone who expected to be listened to.
“In life, people need to know where they stand, when to step forward, and when to back off. Emmy’s married now. She has her own family, and a husband who loves her. What are you doing here? Are you trying to make things hard for her, or just embarrass yourself? Sometimes, letting go is the only way to have any dignity left.”
Dean’s expression darkened, but his eyes slid past Teresa to Andrew, who hovered by her side. With a little smirk, Dean said, “So, Auntie, you and Mr. Aldridge back together again?”
Teresa’s face turned red in a heartbeat, her anger obvious.
Andrew’s eyebrows shot up, and he opened his mouth to respond, but Dean kept talking as if he hadn’t noticed.
“Honestly, isn’t that nice? People spend their whole lives searching, but they never forget the first person who made their heart skip a beat. No matter who else comes along, no matter what happens, that first feeling stays with you, like it’s burned into your bones. To outsiders, it might look like you’re just clinging to the past, but to the people involved, it’s something they can never let go of.”
He glanced at Andrew and Teresa, his voice almost soft. “You and Mr. Aldridge finding your way back to each other… doesn’t that prove some feelings never really fade?”
He looked off in Emmy’s direction, his eyes sharp. “So why can’t Emmy and I have the same chance?”
Without waiting for an answer, Dean turned and walked away, leaving Teresa fuming.
“You!” Teresa snapped, shaking off Andrew’s hand. “I don’t need your help. Leave me alone.”
