“Just passing by. Thought I’d stop and light some incense too.”
Teresa didn’t believe him for a second.
The wind outside was freezing. She instinctively pulled her coat tighter, her voice cool and distant. “I don’t need any of that.”
Marian hurried over, already holding a soft cashmere scarf and a walking stick she’d prepared earlier.
“Here you go, ma’am.”
Teresa took the scarf and wrapped it around her neck. She didn’t even spare Andrew a glance as she started walking forward.
Her leg was already healed, but since there were stone steps ahead, she’d brought the walking stick just in case.
Emmy’s eyes lit up. She immediately waved at Andrew with cheerful enthusiasm.
“Mr. Aldridge, what a coincidence! You’re here too!”
“In that case, I’ll leave Mom to you! James and I are going to check out the market!”
She grabbed James’s hand and dragged him off toward the lively street lined with vendors.
“Emmy! Slow down!”
Teresa called out, sounding a little flustered.
But Emmy either didn’t hear or was pretending not to. Her footsteps only got faster.
Andrew glanced at Teresa’s slightly annoyed profile and didn’t seem bothered at all. He put whatever he was carrying back in his car, then pulled out a long umbrella.
He opened it up and held it over Teresa’s head.
She wasn’t wearing a hat, and delicate snowflakes had already started to gather on her elegant updo.
The gesture caught Marian’s attention. She smacked her forehead, annoyed with herself. “Oh no, I totally forgot to bring your umbrella, ma’am. I’ll have to count on Mr. Aldridge to hold it for you.”
With that, Marian quietly stepped back, giving them space.
Teresa didn’t say anything for a moment.
She took a deep breath and glanced over at the man beside her, who was being way too considerate. Her voice was full of helplessness.
“You really don’t have to do this.”
Andrew kept the umbrella steady and walked beside her, his tone gentle but certain.
