A group of men, caked in mud and snow, burst into the big communal shower room. Even James didn’t have his own private space here, but he was used to scrubbing down with this rowdy bunch. The hot water worked its magic, washing away the cold and the aches from their bodies.
After their showers, everyone stood around their lockers, bare-chested, getting dressed and ready. James pulled out a solid black jar from his locker, twisted off the lid, and dug out a generous scoop of thick, white cream. He took his time, smoothing it over his face, neck, and hands, making sure he didn’t miss a spot.
Nobody batted an eye. By now, they all knew the drill. Their tough-as-nails captain, James, was shameless about his skincare routine. Honestly, he didn’t even try to hide it. But even so, nobody dared to tease him or ask questions.
If anyone performed well, though, they sometimes got to share. Today, Liu Kai, who’d just come in third place, sidled over with a big grin, rubbing his hands together hopefully.
“James, I moved up two places this time. Almost caught up with Mike. Mind sharing a little?”
James glanced around at the other guys. Several heads turned, eyes bright with anticipation, but nobody said a word. They all wanted in, but nobody wanted to speak up.
James, in a rare good mood, probably thanks to his wife spoiling him lately, didn’t hesitate. He grabbed a brand new jar from his locker and tossed it over.
“You guys aren’t getting any younger. Take care of yourselves. Maybe you’ll actually find girlfriends.”
That set off a wave of excitement. The guys rushed over, crowding around like kids at Christmas. Liu Kai opened the jar and everyone scooped out a big dollop, carefully spreading it over their rough skin and necks, treating it like some precious treasure.
The cream was smooth, sinking right in without any scent. Nobody knew exactly what was in it, just that James’s family sent a jar every month. It looked expensive, way out of their price range.
Once James finished up, he headed back to the dorm, barely able to wait before grabbing his phone. He opened his chat with Emmy, thumbs flying across the screen. In that moment, he was just another guy in love, totally lost in his own little world.
…
The next morning, James and Emmy were up early and ready to head out. Emmy didn’t drive her flashy Porsche today. Instead, she took the white Bentley she’d given James. They picked up Teresa at Moonlight Bay before setting off.
