The man’s breath caught in his throat.
A moment later, his lips crashed onto hers, hot and demanding.
“Who are you calling incapable?” His voice was low and rough, almost burning.
His hand slipped under her pajamas, moving boldly, setting fire to her skin with every touch.
Emmy melted right away, her whole body turning weak and pliable.
Just as she was losing herself, arms wrapping around his shoulders, he suddenly went still.
He just held her close, their foreheads pressed together, his breath warm and heavy against her.
“Go to sleep.”
Emmy blinked in confusion.
That was it?
A wave of embarrassment swept through her, making it impossible to ask for what she wanted.
She turned over, pulling the covers up, her back facing him.
Even with fabric between them, she could feel his body’s response, the tension in his muscles, the restraint.
She muttered quietly, “Don’t hurt yourself holding back.”
Behind her, his voice rumbled with a hint of laughter. “Oh? So you do want it?”
“I do not!” Emmy snapped, both embarrassed and annoyed. “I’m just worried about you!”
James pulled her in from behind, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of her head.
“The doctor said we need to take it easy,” he murmured.
“And we’re going to Putuo Temple in a couple days. You’ll need to save your energy.”
Emmy fell silent.
He was right. Every time after they were together, she felt worn out, even though all she did was lie there and enjoy it.
She thought about the long staircase outside the temple and felt a headache coming on.
…
The next morning, snow was still falling.
Outside, everything was covered in white, the world so pure and beautiful it looked unreal.
Emmy loved days like this.
She curled up in the big rocking chair by the living room window. Soft light spilled in, and on the little table beside her, a clay teapot filled the air with the soothing scent of floral tea.
She was holding a book about neural networks, the pages crammed with formulas and code.
Wanting the baby to get a little early learning, she changed her usual routine and read the complicated text out loud. It helped her remember better too.
Next to her, Ivy listened for a bit, her brain quickly turning to mush. She recognized the words, but together they made no sense at all.
