After an intense night together, Emmy was so worn out that she could barely keep her eyes open. She drifted off almost immediately, falling into a deep, peaceful sleep.
James cleaned her up with gentle hands, tucked the blanket securely around her, and slipped out into the master bedroom. His eyes swept across every corner, sharp and attentive. He didn’t spot anything out of place. With a thoughtful frown, he grabbed the bottle of stretch mark oil before leaving the room.
He knocked on the housekeeper’s door.
Ivy answered quickly, pulling a robe around herself, her eyes widening in surprise when she saw him.
“Sir? It’s so late, you’re still up?”
James looked perfectly calm. “I just saw a little bug in the master bedroom. Tomorrow, make sure you do a deep clean. Check every corner.”
Ivy nodded at once. “Of course, I’ll take care of it.”
As James walked away, Ivy closed the door and couldn’t help but mumble to herself, “That’s odd. How would there be bugs in this house?”
Back in the guest room, Emmy was fast asleep, her breathing soft and steady. James moved quietly, sitting at the edge of the bed. He gently lifted a corner of the blanket, exposing her soft belly. Pouring some oil into his palm, he warmed it with his hands, then massaged it gently onto her skin.
Even in her sleep, Emmy seemed to sense his touch. She let out a faint, sleepy sound, then sank even deeper into her dreams.
…
The next morning, Emmy woke up to an empty space beside her. She was used to James’s early schedule by now. Reaching for her phone, she saw it was just past eight.
His message was already waiting for her on the screen. There was a short video of thick snowflakes falling, covering everything in white. He’d added a text below it.
[It’s snowing again. Still so cold today. Your bed is the warmest spot in the world.]
A smile tugged at Emmy’s lips, chasing away the last bits of sleepiness. She jumped out of bed and hurried to the window. Sure enough, the world outside was blanketed in snow, so beautiful it looked like something out of a fairy tale.
She stared out for a while, then remembered her promise to her mom. Pulling up their chat, she sent a message.
[Mom wants us to go with her to Putuo Temple on Saturday to give thanks. Are you free?]
