Before Emmy could get a word in, James’s whole vibe changed. He looked straight at her, serious.
“What did Isabel want to talk about yesterday?”
She hadn’t expected him to bring up Isabel first, but she didn’t hold back. Emmy told him everything that happened.
“She kept circling around, asking about my relationship with Mr. Nelson. Honestly, I think she sees me as some kind of rival and was trying to size me up.”
Emmy couldn’t help but laugh at herself.
“It’s so weird. She’s convinced there’s something secret going on between you, me, and Mr. Nelson.”
James’s lips twitched. “Does she think, like I used to, that you and Mr. Nelson are actually the same person?”
“But that’s impossible. Even if you were in special ops, you can’t play two people at once. Unless you’ve got some magical clone ability?”
James didn’t say anything, just listened. Only after Emmy finished did he finally speak, his voice quiet but firm.
“From now on, stay away from her.”
Emmy nodded, her tone matching his seriousness. “She’s not the Isabel I used to know. Every conversation feels like a trap. I have to think so hard just to keep up.”
Then James dropped a bombshell that made Emmy’s heart skip.
“Isabel’s working with Claudia now.”
The words hit, but Emmy managed to stay calm.
“I kind of guessed as much when I was at that military hospital on the border,” she said.
“She kept probing, asking if I’d be able to go back and compete. I knew something was off with her.”
She took a slow breath. “Claudia’s been quiet for a while. Is she up to something again?”
Emmy just knew James’s trip to the base today had Claudia written all over it. The military never took their eyes off her.
James lowered his voice. “Yeah. Claudia’s making moves in the capital, stirring up trouble for Ben’s sake.”
“But don’t worry. I’ll take care of it.”
Emmy wasn’t so easily reassured. “I already asked my senior at Riverdale for help. We’ve tracked down Evelina’s location.”
“If you want to deal with Claudia, you have to start with her daughter. That’s who she cares about most.”
“I’ve got an idea. Want to hear it?”
“Tell me when I get back,” James said.
Emmy was half-asleep by the time she heard him come home. The shower turned on, then off.
A few minutes later, James slipped into bed, wrapped his arms around her, and pulled her close. His breath was hot against her skin.
James tipped her chin up, his voice playful and a little dangerous.
“You think I can’t hear you?”
He leaned closer, his breath warm.
“If you want that kind of credit, you’d better learn how to protect yourself first.”
Emmy grumbled, “Fine, I get it.”
Before she could say anything else, James kissed her deeply.
His tongue claimed hers, slow and possessive.
One hand slid from her chin down, loosening the belt of her robe without missing a beat.
His palm moved over her stomach, then lower.
Emmy melted, her whole body turning soft in his arms.
Usually so reserved, she clung to his neck, voice trembling. “Hurry…”
James let out a low groan, braced himself on the bed, then lifted her up.
They gave in to each other, lost in the night.
