The office felt cavernous with just Andrew left behind. When Teresa walked out, it was as if she took all the light and warmth along with her. Her fresh, woody perfume still lingered in the air, mixing with the scent of the food he had brought. Together, they settled into a kind of quiet loneliness that he couldn’t quite name.
He sat in her chair for what felt like forever. Only then did he finally reach for his phone. His finger hovered over the screen for a long time before he opened a chat window. Slowly, almost ceremoniously, he typed, “Emmy, I hope you don’t mind me asking, but would it bother you if I tried to win your mom back?”
Emmy saw the message just as she was curled up on the sofa, munching on the sugared hawthorn balls James had gotten her. The second she read those words, her eyes went wide. She started coughing so hard she almost couldn’t breathe, cheeks turning bright red as powdered sugar caught in her throat.
“Miss, slow down!” Ivy hurried over with a glass of water, patting her gently on the back.
It took several gulps for Emmy to catch her breath. As soon as she could, she snatched up her phone and typed back, “Of course I don’t mind!!! I’m cheering for you all the way!!!” The flood of exclamation marks said it all.
A reply popped up almost instantly. “Thank you.”
Grinning from ear to ear, Emmy took a screenshot and sent it to James, adding a cheerful voice message, “Looks like Mom’s about to have her own springtime romance!”
After that, though, there was no reply. The silence stretched on until late at night when her phone finally buzzed again. It was a voice message.
She pressed play. James’s low, smooth voice filled her ears. “Mr. Aldridge is a good man. He didn’t go straight to your mom. He asked for your opinion first. That means he respects you both. He knows where the boundaries are and what matters most. That’s rare. Your mom deserves someone like him.”
Emmy blinked, a little surprised. She’d just wanted to share her excitement, not get a whole thoughtful analysis. Smiling to herself, she replied, “What kept you so busy today? Why are you only just getting back to me?”
Her phone rang. James was calling.
“Hey,” she answered.
Wind roared through the line.
“Are you outside?” she asked.
