Andrew sat quietly, his eyes fixed on the plate of marbled beef and asparagus in front of him. He used his fork to carefully sort through the dish, picking out every bit of green onion, focused and patient.
This wasn’t just any meal. It was a specialty from a little place in town, the kind of dish you had to order days in advance, expensive and rare. Yet Andrew seemed completely absorbed in the task, making sure not a single scallion remained.
Teresa watched him, caught off guard. She loved the scent of green onion but couldn’t stand the texture, a quirk she sometimes forgot herself. She never expected Andrew to remember, let alone care.
She picked up a piece of the beef he had so painstakingly cleaned for her. It was tender, the sauce rich and full of flavor, but something inside her twisted. She couldn’t name the feeling.
They ate in silence for a while before Andrew finally spoke, his voice gentle.
“Teresa, Duoduo’s about to go into mass production. Are you really not coming back to the project?”
She finished chewing, dabbed at her lips with a napkin, and kept her tone cool.
“My part’s done. Anything after this isn’t in our contract.”
Andrew’s brow creased with worry. “But what if something happens on the production line?”
“It won’t,” Teresa interrupted, her confidence unwavering. “I checked the samples myself, over twenty times. As long as your factory sticks to the design, there’s no way anything will go wrong.”
She set her fork down and looked straight at him.
“Mr. Aldridge, I know what you’re trying to say.”
“But I think we should both be realistic and think about our kids.”
Andrew’s fingers tightened around his fork, emotions flickering in his eyes.
“And when do you start thinking about yourself?”
His voice was rough. “Emmy’s grown up. She has her own family now. You’re still so young. Are you really planning to live the rest of your life alone?”
Teresa gave a small, almost amused smile.
“What’s so wrong with that?”
“I get to decide how I spend every minute of my day. I don’t have to change my life for anyone else.”
“I can read when I want, work when I want. The whole place is my own. It’s peaceful and I feel free.”
