“We argued, but it’s over now. We made up,” Emmy said, tucking her knees up and resting her chin on them.
“I’ve been thinking, nobody’s perfect. He’s already amazing in so many ways. I can’t expect him to agree with me on everything.”
“And Abriella told me his parents weren’t really there for him. He basically grew up on his own. Now that he finally has a home, I just want to make things good for us.”
“Maybe because of that one big fight, he’s changed a lot lately. He’s been so much sweeter to me.”
Teresa let out a quiet sigh, her voice softer than before. “Men, you know, they always have more on their shoulders. It makes sense they’d worry more about things.”
She paused for a moment, then changed direction. “But there’s something I don’t get. Didn’t he grow up in a regular family? Why would he believe the whole twins are unlucky thing? That’s something only those super old-fashioned rich families care about.”
“Did you ever tell him I wanted to meet his parents?”
Emmy shook her head a little. “I asked about his family. It sounds like both his parents remarried. He’s the only name on his household record. I didn’t want to keep pushing. I was afraid it’d just bring up bad memories.”
“Mom,” Emmy hesitated for a second, “I’ve actually been thinking about adding him to our family record.”
“That way, he wouldn’t have to be alone anymore.”
Teresa’s heart ached for him. “Poor kid. He’s had it rough.”
But then she added, “He’s a grown man, though. If he gets added to our household, people will say he married into the wife’s family. That’s not great for his reputation.”
She thought for a second, then made up her mind. “Alright. After the New Year, you can transfer your registration to his. It’ll make things way easier when you two have kids anyway.”
Emmy didn’t answer. She just frowned.
If she moved, her mom would be the only one left on their family record.
Teresa seemed to know what she was thinking. “Don’t worry about me.”
“I can’t stay with you your whole life. The one who’ll be by your side is your husband.”
“You’re already starting a family. It doesn’t make sense for you two to stay on separate records.”
“Don’t stress about it. I’ll talk to your husband, okay?”
They chatted about random little things for a while before hanging up.
Emmy stayed curled up on the couch, not noticing that in a hidden spot under her vanity, a tiny red light kept blinking.
