Dumped My Cheating Ex. Now I'm Sleeping Next to a Billionaire CEO novel Chapter 589

Danny hung back, the corners of his mouth twitching with amusement. He couldn’t help thinking, I never would’ve guessed Mr. Nelson had such a childish side to him. Does Ms. Eincoln know about this?

Even the old doctor from the infirmary, watching the way James’s usual tension melted into a much more animated look, couldn’t hold back a booming laugh. Still, his hands didn’t slow down one bit. He pushed his way into the crowd and managed to grab a set in just his size.

There were plenty to go around this time. Some of the guys even picked up extras for their families. For a while, the whole fire station buzzed with happiness.

James barely had time to enjoy his little moment of pride before his phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out and saw a new message light up the screen.

Number One: Come to the military base. That woman is making a move again.

The smile disappeared from James’s lips. His eyes turned sharp and cold in an instant. He shot back a quick reply. Got it.

He pointed into the crowd. “Brett, keep an eye on things here. I need to step out.”

Then he marched straight for the black SUV parked in the yard. In the blink of an eye, the car vanished around the corner.

The rest of the firefighters stood there, clutching their new clothes, staring at each other in confusion.

“What’s going on? James has been so busy lately. He barely finishes a drill before he’s out the door.”

“He looked really serious. Is something big about to happen?”

“It’s almost the end of the year. Maybe some monster is trying to cause trouble so they can ascend to immortality or something.”

Everyone started talking at once, voices overlapping. But with James in charge, they all felt safe. Soon enough, their attention drifted back to the thick, cozy clothes in their arms, and they headed back to the dorms, excited to try everything on.

Meanwhile, Emmy had just finished her yoga class when her mom called. She grabbed a cashmere blanket and tossed it over her shoulders as she headed to the bedroom.

“Hi, Mom. Did you finally finish work?”

She even made a generous donation. And now it had actually come true. Teresa’s eyes filled with tears, her voice choked with emotion.

Emmy listened to her mom’s watery laughter, half amused, half helpless. “Mom, come on. It’s not like prayers actually decide something like this. The gender was set from the start.”

“Don’t say things like that,” Teresa scolded. “You’re still young. You just don’t get it. When you’re my age, you’ll understand that a little extra faith never hurts. Anyway, it’s settled. The fifteenth is this Saturday. Make sure your husband keeps his schedule clear.”

“Okay.” Emmy gave in. “But… I haven’t told him about the twins’ gender yet.”

Teresa was surprised. “Why not? This is huge news!”

Emmy sighed, her voice barely above a whisper. “I just… I don’t know how he’d react. He actually believes some old superstition that twins are bad luck. He doesn’t seem as thrilled as he should be, so I haven’t brought it up.”

“Did you two have a fight?” Teresa’s voice was tight with concern.
