The chanting had faded before anyone even noticed.
After a few more drawn-out rituals, the ceremony finally wrapped up. Teresa, who was basically a regular here, paid her respects, made a generous donation, and only then seemed genuinely satisfied. She took Emmy by the hand as they stepped out of the meditation room, ready to make the rounds and pray at each of the temple halls.
They had barely made it into the courtyard when a wave of excitement swept over the crowd. People were hurrying in one direction, voices buzzing.
“It’s Master Wuchen! He’s actually here, doing readings himself today!”
“Are you serious? I heard he almost never comes out. Even the richest guy in Riverdale tried to hire him for feng shui and offered millions. He didn’t even flinch!”
“No kidding! His readings are scary accurate!”
“We have to get a reading. Getting advice from him even once in your life is like winning the lottery for three lifetimes!”
Teresa’s eyes sparkled. She grabbed Emmy’s arm and headed toward the crowd without hesitation.
“Let’s go, Emmy. We have to try our luck, too!”
James was right behind them, slipping his hand into Emmy’s. Andrew just gave a helpless smile and followed after Teresa.
The courtyard they entered was usually quiet and beautiful, but today it was packed shoulder to shoulder. Luckily, being a big donor had its perks. A monk at the entrance spotted Teresa and immediately let their group inside with plenty of respect.
Emmy, tagging along in her mother’s wake, still felt a bit out of it. The moment they stepped into the courtyard, she spotted the man everyone was talking about. The master, Wuchen, was sitting cross-legged behind a low table, his beard snowy white, his robe immaculate, his whole presence dignified and calm.
But Emmy just stared at him, stunned. She remembered this man. She had seen him once before, at her grandmother’s nursing home. Back then, he wore ragged clothes and carried a begging bowl, saying he was collecting alms. Her grandmother had even pulled him aside to give Emmy a reading.
While Emmy was lost in her own thoughts, a young monk came over, palms pressed together, and spoke to the crowd.
“Today, fate has brought you all here. Everyone may draw a fortune.”
The crowd, already buzzing, broke into excited whispers. Teresa was grinning ear to ear. She leaned in to whisper to Emmy.
Then it was Emmy’s turn.
She knelt down, not really paying attention, and shook the container.
Clack.
A stick fell out. Emmy picked it up, glanced at it, and immediately sucked in a breath, her brows knitting together.
The worst fortune.
Just as she started to get up, another stick rolled out, landing right next to her hand. Without thinking, Emmy picked it up. This one was the very best fortune.
What was going on?
She looked down at the bad fortune in her hand, and on instinct, started to slip it back into the container.
