The warmth inside the room hit Emmy as soon as she stepped in, the air heavy with the smell of sandalwood. She followed her grandmother through the door and only then noticed the TV was on, blaring one of those loud, over-the-top variety shows that seemed to have taken over every living room lately. Laughter and goofy sound effects filled the space. No wonder Grandma was in such a good mood.

“Oh my, your hands are freezing!” Grandma grabbed Emmy’s hands, worry written all over her face. She blew on them, rubbing them between her own. “Sweetheart, it’s way too cold for you to be running around like this. What if you get sick?”

Something wasn’t right. Emmy could see it in her grandmother’s eyes, the way she seemed a little lost in her own world. It was obvious her illness was acting up again. Emmy felt a sting of sadness, but she just smiled and went along with it.

“Grandma, I’m honestly not cold at all. It’s so warm in here I was about to take off my coat.”

Teresa hovered nearby, her brows knit in concern. She looked confused, but she could tell something was off with the old woman. Maybe Grandma had mistaken Emmy for someone else.

Emmy reached out and took her mother’s hand, her voice gentle. “Grandma, this is my mom.”

She tried to jog Grandma’s memory. “You brought her a potted osmanthus when she was in the hospital. Do you remember?”

Grandma looked up at Teresa, her gaze soft but unfocused, like she was searching for something just out of reach. It was clear nothing was coming back to her.

But then, just like that, Grandma’s face lit up with a wide, cheerful grin. “Oh, so you’re my in-law!” she said with a rush of affection. “You look so young and beautiful. No wonder Emmy turned out to be such a lovely, smart girl!”

She patted Emmy’s hand with pride, as if she wanted to brag about something specific but couldn’t quite remember. After a second, she just laughed a little, embarrassed.

“Don’t you worry about a thing!” Her tone suddenly grew firm, her voice strong. “Now that your daughter’s married into the Nelson family, I won’t let anyone do her wrong. If anyone dares to mess with her, I’ll break their legs myself.”
