“My dear, it’s our first time meeting. Here, take this. Think of it as a little gift from me.”
The bracelet was an incredible green, almost glowing under the warm lights. It looked rich and glassy, the kind of jade you only ever hear about in stories.
Teresa’s heart skipped a beat. She tried to pull her hand away.
“Madam, I really can’t accept this. It’s too much. Please, you should keep it.”
“Take it.”
The old woman’s face suddenly went serious. There was a force behind her cloudy eyes that made Teresa freeze, unable to move. She glanced at her daughter for help.
Emmy gave her a tiny nod.
“Mom, just take it. Grandma is giving it to you, so you should accept it.”
Emmy knew her grandmother wasn’t always clear-headed these days. If they pushed back, it might upset her and make her feel worse.
Teresa gave in, letting the bracelet slide onto her wrist. The jade was cool and heavy, and she felt a strange mix of emotions.
Who exactly was this old woman, to give away something so priceless like it was nothing?
Once Teresa had the bracelet, the old woman smiled again, clearly pleased. Then she turned to the safe and spotted a thick stack of cash.
“Oh no!”
She slapped her leg in frustration, then took Emmy’s hand, her face full of apology.
“My memory is terrible. I completely forgot your gift, Emmy! I’m so sorry.”
“Don’t take it the wrong way. Grandma just gets forgetful sometimes.”
She handed Emmy the stack of cash without another word.
“Here, you take it.”
At the same time, she started digging through the jewelry, her casual attitude making Teresa’s eye twitch. Soon, she picked out a necklace. The chain was delicate platinum, but the pendant was huge and fiery, an oval gem the size of a pigeon egg.
It was a perfect pigeon blood ruby.
She held the necklace up to Emmy’s neck and nodded.
“This looks beautiful on you. Your skin is so fair... it’s perfect. Take it.”
The caregiver soon came over.
“Madam, the doctor is here. It’s time for your treatment.”
The old woman frowned, obviously unhappy.
“I’m not finished talking with my granddaughter-in-law! Tell them to come back tomorrow!”
“Grandma,” Emmy said softly, her voice gentle and sweet, “we can talk any time, but you can’t skip your treatment.”
“If you’re good and go for your treatment, I’ll visit every day. We can talk as long as you want. How does that sound?”
The old woman still didn’t want to let go of Emmy’s hand. Her eyes were full of longing.
Emmy coaxed her for a while longer until at last, the old woman gave a reluctant nod.
Soon, two doctors in white coats came in with their medical bags. Emmy and Teresa stood up and quietly slipped out of the room.
The door closed behind them, leaving the soft voices inside fading away.
