As soon as they stepped outside, Emmy spun around and handed the cash and that stunning ruby necklace to the caregiver.
“These are way too valuable. Could you please keep them safe for us?”
She turned to her mom. “Mom, your bracelet too…”
But the caregiver took a step back, shaking her head.
“Ms. Eincoln, I really can’t,” she said, looking uncomfortable. “If the madam gives something away, we as staff have no right to take it back.”
Emmy’s nerves started to fray. “But Grandma’s confused. She thinks I’m someone else. We can’t just… keep these.”
She worried the caregiver might think they were gold diggers or something.
But the woman just smiled gently.
“The madam was really happy today. That’s what matters most.”
“And honestly, I don’t have the authority to take them back. How about this, Ms. Eincoln? Why don’t you hold onto them for her for now?”
Her words were so careful and polite, Emmy couldn’t find a single argument. All she could do was shoot her mom a helpless look and tuck the valuables away for the moment.
The three of them walked in silence, passing through the moon gate and down the stone path.
Teresa ran her fingers over the cool, smooth jade bracelet at her wrist and whispered, “Emmy, who is that lady, really?”
“I’ve never seen Imperial jade this perfect in my life.”
Emmy kept her voice low. “She’s the matriarch of the Nelson family. One of the most powerful families out there.”
“What?!”
Teresa stopped in her tracks, staring back at the peaceful courtyard, eyes wide.
“She… she’s Mrs. Nelson? The one everyone talks about?”
“Oh my god, no way…”
Everyone in the city’s high society had heard about Mrs. Nelson’s legendary past. She was the woman who held up her husband’s entire branch of the family, making tough calls in a world full of powerful men. She was the icon, the real deal, the woman all socialites looked up to.
Teresa frowned, hesitating, then asked the question that sounded ridiculous even to her. “Are… are you part of the Nelson family too?”
Emmy’s heart skipped a beat. She glanced at the man beside her.
Sunlight filtered through the leaves, scattering shadows across his tall figure and giving his sharp features an even more defined look.
James paused and met their searching eyes, his own expression calm and impossible to read.
“I’m not.”
Teresa let out a breath she’d probably been holding.
Of course she’d been overthinking. Families like that would never look their way. And the Nelson heirs were all born with silver spoons. Why would any of them become a firefighter?
Honestly, even though she knew his last name was Nelson—a name you barely ever heard—she’d never actually linked him to that unreachable family.
“Mom,” Emmy suddenly said, snapping Teresa out of her thoughts, “how many sons does the Nelson family have?”
