Emmy only found out about the temple visit because she’d overheard it, and as part of the deal, she’d shared the secret with Claudia alone.
On the other end of the call, Claudia’s voice was lazy and teasing, like she was barely trying to hide her amusement.
“I would have loved to stir things up, but James’s people are annoyingly efficient. They cleared out every possible danger for Emmy ahead of time.” Claudia sounded disappointed. “The monkey almost worked… but that went sideways, too.”
Isabel’s brows knitted together. “What monkey?”
Suddenly, the memory crashed into her. The acrobatics show at the temple… the one she’d invited Emmy to watch.
Everything made sense in an instant.
Isabel clenched her teeth. “It was you. You told me Emmy liked those shows, just so I’d bring her there.”
“You messed with that monkey, didn’t you? Now Emmy thinks I’m the one behind it.”
“Claudia, why would you sabotage our friendship? What are you after?”
Claudia let out a soft, almost playful sigh, like a cat toying with its prey.
“You’re just never ruthless enough, Isabel.”
“I was only helping you out, you know.”
A cold shiver ran through Isabel, straight from the soles of her feet to the crown of her head.
“Ms. Summer, you and I both know Emmy absolutely hates you now.”
“She’s the biggest thing standing in your way if you want to marry into the Nelson family.”
“You know what needs to be done. I don’t have to say it out loud, do I?”
Isabel’s whole body shook with anger. She finally saw it clearly—Claudia had been playing her from the very start. Luring her in, pushing her to turn against Emmy, then cutting off every possible escape, making sure they were stuck together on the same sinking ship.
