After Teresa was dropped off at Moonlight Bay, James turned the car around and headed for Applewood Estate.
With just the two of them in the car, Emmy finally spoke up. “If it’s hard for you to set up a meeting with your parents, just let my mom know. You don’t have to push yourself.”
James pressed his lips together, not answering her directly. Instead, he asked, “Are you really okay with moving your household registration to mine?”
Emmy blinked, then smiled. “Why wouldn’t I be?”
She reached over and covered his hand on the steering wheel, her touch gentle and warm. “We’re married. We should’ve been on the same household registration ages ago.”
She hesitated, her voice tinged with a little guilt. “It’s just... if I move, my mom will be alone on hers. That’s why I never mentioned it before.”
“But she brought it up herself this time. I think she wants... you to have a real family too.”
James suddenly turned his hand over, gripping hers tight.
A sudden heat stung his eyes.
Family. That word felt distant and unfamiliar, carrying a pain he’d never been able to reach. But hearing it from her, it actually felt healing, as if it could melt away everything that hurt.
He stayed quiet for a long moment, and when he finally spoke, his voice was rough. “Okay.”
“I’ll find a chance to invite my parents to meet you and your mom.”
Emmy’s lips curled up into a bright, soft smile.
Maybe she was really tired, or maybe it was just the cozy warmth in the car, but as they talked, she yawned, her eyes tearing up a little. Her head lolled to the side and she leaned back, her breathing becoming slow and even.
James didn’t wake her. He slowed down and eased the car into the underground parking garage.
He turned off the engine.
