As soon as the elevator doors slid shut behind them, a sleek Maybach pulled into the parking spot nearby. The headlights flicked off. Dean sat behind the wheel, eyes locked on the Bentley parked up ahead. He stayed that way for a long time before finally turning to grab a slip of paper from the passenger seat.
He’d picked it up after Emmy and the others had left, hoping for some kind of sign. He just wanted to know if he and Emmy still had a chance, if they could start over the way he wished. But the lot he drew turned out to be the worst possible omen.
His face went cold right away. Just like Emmy had done, he ignored the bad luck and reached in for another, this time picking the luckiest slip he could find.
He brought it to Master Wuchen.
The old monk sat quietly, fingers sliding over his prayer beads. His voice was calm, almost detached. “What you’re searching for is just an illusion. That bond is already broken.”
“You’ve got a new beginning in front of you. Cherish what you have now. Don’t cling to what’s gone. Let it go while you still can.”
Dean felt like he’d been punched in the chest. “Why? What if I want to try again?”
Master Wuchen looked right through him, those cloudy eyes somehow seeing everything. He frowned a little. “Every flower is its own world. Every leaf can bring enlightenment. You’re so obsessed it’s turning into something toxic.”
“Fate has its rules. If you try to force it, you’ll only end up hurting yourself, and the ending will be… far from happy.”
Dean couldn’t hold back a bitter laugh. “You only care about that bad omen. Why not take a look at this lucky one?” He shook the good fortune slip in his hand. “Destiny is just an excuse for people who can’t control their own lives.”
The master’s frown deepened and he just shook his head. “This slip isn’t meant for you. It must have fallen out by mistake. Please put it back.”
“Put it back?” Dean almost laughed out loud. Like he’d just heard the world’s funniest joke. He clenched both slips in his hand, eyes dark and determined.
“I don’t believe in fate. My life is mine to decide.”
He turned and walked out. On his way past the trash can, he tossed the unlucky slip inside.
He kept the lucky one, the words printed bold and clear.
A hidden dragon rises, destiny shifts in his favor. A perfect match, a life filled with harmony and laughter. Blessed children, fortune that never ends.
