Emmy’s eyebrows drew together as she stared at him. In his dark eyes, there was a fierce possessiveness that felt almost obsessive, and beneath that intensity, she caught a flicker of… hurt? The realization made her heart stumble.
If he was being this open, how could she just ignore it? That would be way too cold.
So she didn’t hesitate. Emmy suddenly launched herself at him, straddling his lap. She tugged down the collar of his t-shirt, exposing smooth skin and the sharp, tempting line of his collarbone.
“You said it,” she reminded him, her voice low. Without a second thought, she pressed her lips to his skin, just below the collarbone where it wouldn’t be too obvious, and left a bold mark. If it showed, well, a turtleneck could hide just about anything.
The effect was instant. His whole body went taut, every muscle pulled tight. He let out a muffled groan from deep in his chest.
Before Emmy could even catch her breath, the world spun. He flipped her over in a heartbeat, hovering above her, his breath hot against her skin. His hand found the small clasp on her back, fingers working with practiced ease.
Right then, her phone started buzzing.
Emmy pushed at his shoulder. “Give me my phone.”
James scowled, clearly annoyed, his chest heaving. After a moment, he reluctantly grabbed her phone from her bag and handed it over, but kept his other hand under her shirt, calloused fingers stroking slow, teasing circles against her skin.
A shiver ran through Emmy’s whole body.
Trying to steady herself, she slid her finger across the screen to answer.
“Hello?” Her voice came out soft, breathy, and more than a little unsteady.
There was a pause on the other end.
“Last night,” Krystina replied, her voice low. “Should we move your plan up?”
Emmy’s eyes narrowed. She always meant to lure Evelina to the Capital, but she hadn’t expected Evelina to walk right into her trap. Claudia had been way too quiet lately, and that could only mean trouble. Emmy couldn’t sit around and wait for Claudia to make her move. She needed to act first. She’d use Evelina to ruin Claudia’s reputation in the Capital, make sure Claudia couldn’t keep her place, and force Ben to divorce her to protect himself.
Now that Evelina was here, the timing was perfect.
“Leave it to me now that she’s in the Capital,” Emmy said. “Thanks for watching her all this time, Krystina.” She hesitated, then asked, “When do you think you’ll be free to bring Ollie to visit?”
Krystina sighed. “Probably not any time soon. Things are a little crazy right now.”
Emmy couldn’t help pushing a little more. “Have you thought about what I mentioned last time?”
