The phone call hung in awkward silence.
After a few seconds, Krystina spoke again, her tone a mix of fondness and exasperation. “Emmy, I really do love you, but can you please stay out of my marriage? This is my business.”
It was odd. Emmy had always known when to draw the line, so why couldn’t she let go of this? Most people tried to patch things up, not push for a breakup. Sometimes it felt like she was the odd one out.
Emmy pressed her lips together, worry creasing her forehead. The clock was ticking. There were less than three months left before everything would fall apart. If Krystina didn’t leave that jerk soon, something terrible might happen.
“I need to go,” Krystina said suddenly, and her voice was almost cheerful. “My husband’s home. Seriously, don’t worry. We’re really happy.”
She hung up before Emmy could respond.
Emmy stared down at her phone, her brow furrowed so tight it hurt. Even when James reached over, his fingers gently tracing circles on her skin, she couldn’t get back into the mood. That anxious feeling had completely smothered any lingering heat.
James noticed right away, his voice low and a little sharp. “Still thinking about Evelina?”
He turned her to face him.
“I’ll have my contacts in the military track her down. We’ll do everything your way, just like you said.”
“Stay with me,” he murmured, leaning in so close she could feel his breath on her lips. “Focus.”
His lips were almost on hers when Emmy suddenly reached up, cupping his face in her hands.
“That’s not what’s bothering me.”
James froze, his dark eyes locking onto hers, waiting.
Emmy’s gaze was heavy with worry. “I’m scared for Krystina. Her husband is cheating, and I’m worried he might do something awful to her for the other woman.”
James arched an eyebrow, his tone dismissive. “Krystina isn’t a kid. She can deal with her own mess.”
