Emmy’s face went pale. She reached out on instinct, but quickly pulled her hand back. She didn’t do anything reckless. Instead, she stood up, walked over, and shut the bedroom door behind her.
“Ivy, when you were trying to catch bugs the other day, did you touch my vanity?” Emmy called out.
Ivy nodded without thinking. “Yeah, I did. I moved it out and cleaned it, top to bottom.”
Emmy pressed, “Did you clean under it?”
Ivy blinked, trying to remember. “Underneath? I used a duster down there, swept it a couple times… Why? What’s going on?”
Emmy’s brows knit together. Her voice was cold and quiet. “Someone hid a listening device under my vanity.”
Ivy’s eyes went huge, shock all over her face. “What? How is that even possible? No one comes into the master bedroom except me!” She rushed to explain, words tumbling out. “Miss, I’ve worked for you and your mom for years. I would never do something like that.”
“I know. I trust you.” Emmy’s eyes were calm, almost scary in how steady they were. “I already have a pretty good idea who did it.”
“Ivy, just act normal. Pretend you don’t know a thing. Don’t say anything to anyone. Nothing changes for now.”
“I don’t even know how much they might have heard.”
Seeing the sharp look in Emmy’s eyes, Ivy swallowed hard and nodded quickly.
Emmy headed straight into her study. She opened her laptop and her fingers flew over the keys. Lines of code scrolled down the screen as she scanned every device connected to the network: phones, TVs, smart home gadgets, even a tiny speaker.
A few minutes later, she found it. There was only one suspicious network connection in the whole house, and it was coming from the master bedroom.
Emmy’s eyes narrowed. She followed the digital trail, tracing it back in seconds. An IP address popped up. The source was right next door, in the building beside them.
Her hands froze on the keyboard. Emmy leaned back in her chair, feeling a chill run up her spine.
It was her. Isabel.
James had been right all along.
Isabel had managed to sneak into the master bedroom and plant a bug, right under her nose. Who knew how much she’d heard these last few days? No wonder Isabel had popped up at the temple at just the right time, with a monkey already set up as a distraction.
