Emmy turned away, her voice dropping to a whisper. “It’s not a good time to talk on the phone. I’ll come to the hospital and explain everything in person.”
She hung up and went to change her clothes.
A few minutes later, Emmy was ready to go. She stepped out and headed downstairs, only to run right into the last person she wanted to see waiting by the elevator.
Dean stood there, holding that deep blue scarf in his hand.
He looked surprised to see her, one eyebrow arching. “Heading out? Where are you going?”
Emmy didn’t bother answering. She just told her bodyguard, “Close the door.”
But Dean took a long stride and stepped right into the elevator with her.
He didn’t say a word. Right in front of her, he slowly wrapped the scarf around his neck, taking his time with it.
His expensive suit and that rough, handmade scarf couldn't have looked more out of place.
Emmy’s eyebrows drew together in a tight frown.
Dean leaned in, his voice low. “Remember this scarf? You spent ages knitting it for me. It was a birthday present.”
Her eyes went cold. “Mr. Sparrow, you can just toss something like that in the trash.”
“Trash?” Dean laughed quietly. “Even if it is trash, James doesn’t have it.”
He stared straight at her, his eyes dark. “Emmy, just admit it. James isn’t really in your heart.”
She pressed her lips together, then suddenly shot him a glare as something clicked in her mind.
“Did you use this scarf yesterday to mess with James? Is that why he was so weird after we got back from Putuo Temple?”
Last night, James wouldn’t leave her neck alone, always kissing and biting, always touching her. In the middle of the night, she’d even felt his hand on her skin, stroking over and over like he wanted to strangle her. This morning, when she looked in the mirror, her neck was covered in red marks. If she hadn’t had the scarf to hide them, she wouldn’t have dared leave the house.
Dean just raised his brow at her accusation. “You two are always together. When would I even get the chance?”
Emmy kept glaring. “You better not have.”
“A man like you, Mr. Sparrow, shouldn’t stoop so low.”
Dean’s expression tightened and he suddenly changed the subject. “I thought we were working together. Why did you move without talking to me first?”
“Evelina ran back to the Capital because she wanted to see me. Wouldn’t it make more sense to let me be the bait?”
“Or do you still have a problem with us meeting?”
“Fine.” Emmy nodded, dropping her hand. “You’re really not going to return it?”
“Don’t worry. On your birthday, I’ll make sure you get a gift you’ll never forget.”
She didn’t wait for a reply. She turned and got into her car, not looking back.
Dean stood there, watching her Porsche disappear down the street.
“A big gift,” he repeated softly, the words lingering in the air.
He had a strange, uneasy feeling, but then a slow smile touched his lips.
What could she really do to him anyway?
Her anger, her resentment, her threats—he figured it all came from the fact that she just couldn’t let him go.
And if she couldn’t let him go, she’d never really do anything to hurt him.
In fact, he was actually looking forward to it now.
He couldn’t wait for his birthday, curious to see just how she’d prove, all over again, that she still hadn’t moved on.
