Emmy sat quietly for a moment, then looked up with clear, determined eyes.
“Yes.”
She said it without hesitation, and then added, “I really want to spend my life with him. For real, no games.”
“But only if he never betrays me or lies to me. If he ever does, I can take back every bit of love I ever gave.”
Abriella felt a little jolt of worry for James. She almost winced on his behalf.
Emmy’s eyebrows drew together as she circled back to her original question. “So, what should I give him? Maybe... I could knit him a hat?”
“Hold it right there,” Abriella jumped in before she could finish. “I’ve seen your knitting, Emmy. You turned a straight scarf into something that looks like a rollercoaster. Do you really think James would ever wear a hat you made?”
Emmy went quiet.
She had to admit, her knitting skills were... not great.
Still, she really wanted to make something for James with her own hands. Something better than that lopsided scarf.
Abriella’s eyes sparkled as an idea popped into her head.
“What about a neck warmer?”
“It’s not a scarf, it’s fancier, and way easier to wear.”
Emmy’s whole face lit up. She nodded enthusiastically.
“That’s perfect! I’ll ask Ivy to teach me when I get home.”
...
Emmy stayed with Abriella at the hospital until late afternoon before heading back to Applewood Estate.
When she got off the elevator, she was surprised to see a table set up outside, complete with a laptop and a card reader. Two people from property management stood by, waiting.
As soon as Emmy walked up, the manager hurried over, looking a bit sheepish.
“Mrs. Hayes, sorry to bother you. We upgraded the elevator system today. Fixed some security bugs.”
“From now on, residents’ key cards will only work for their own floor. So we need to update your card.”
The change caught Emmy off guard, but she handed over her card without hesitation.
“That’s a great idea. Honestly, this should’ve been done ages ago.”
Finally, she wouldn’t have to worry about certain uninvited guests showing up at her door just because they had a card.
The manager smiled. “We missed it before, but a resident suggested it. Our boss took it seriously and told us to get it done today.”
He handed her the newly programmed card, still polite. “Thank you for your patience.”
Emmy waved it off. No big deal. Her bodyguard handed over his card too, and the whole process went by quickly.
