The next morning, Emmy woke up and, to her surprise, James was still there beside her.
Sunlight slipped through the curtains, casting a soft glow over his usually sharp features. For once, he looked almost gentle.
She blinked at him. “You didn’t go to work?”
James opened his eyes slowly, reached out, and pulled her back into his arms. He rested his chin on her head, his voice rough with sleep. “I was tired last night. Slept in. I’ll head in around noon.”
Emmy stared at him in disbelief. This was the same James who lived and breathed self-discipline. He never slept in.
But she didn’t dwell on it. Instead, she reached for her phone to check the time. The first thing she saw was a message and a video from Dean.
She clicked on it.
The video was crystal clear. Claudia and Evelina’s conversation played out like a scene from a movie.
James looked relaxed, still holding her close, but his eyes were fixed on her phone, sharp and unreadable.
When the video ended, Emmy’s whole expression changed. Cold. Distant.
“Claudia is really something. She’d throw her own daughter under the bus just to protect herself.”
She spoke with an eerie calm. “If she manages to use Evelina as a shield and calms down the public, Claudia’s going to be even harder to bring down.”
James absentmindedly rubbed her back, his voice low and steady. “If you want, I can have the police drag their feet a bit. Give you a few more days.”
Emmy shook her head.
“This is between us and her. No need to drag the police into it. Someone will notice and start talking. Besides, we’ve got someone else we can use.”
She sent Dean a quick message.
[If you can stall until after the New Year, that’s best.]
She barely had time to put her phone down before Dean called. It was like he’d been waiting for her.
Emmy frowned, glancing at James for a split second.
James just raised his eyebrows, looking completely unbothered. “What? Go on, answer.”
The room went quiet, but something in the air felt different.
James was still holding her, lazily twirling a strand of her hair between his fingers. His voice was soft, but it sent a shiver down her spine.
“So, you and Dean. Did you ever?”
Emmy froze. She didn’t answer.
James chuckled, sounding sure of himself. “I know the night I was drugged was your first. No doubt about it.”
He wasn’t just talking about the blood on the sheets. He remembered everything.
Suddenly, he rolled over, hovering above her, his eyes locked on hers, sharp and searching.
“Then why would Dean say that?”
“What are you so nervous about?”
