Emmy’s breath hitched, her heart thudding so hard it echoed in her ears. She met his searching eyes and the words slipped out before she could stop them.
“Does it really bother you?”
James watched her, noticing the faint tremble in her lashes. His smile deepened, but it lost some of its warmth.
“I just have this feeling… what happened between you two wasn’t as simple as you say.”
Emmy pressed her lips together, silent.
He was always so sharp, always able to see right through her. Sometimes it scared her, the way he seemed to look past everything and straight into her old wounds, as if her seven years in that ruined marriage were written all over her face.
A cold panic started to settle in her chest, hardening into a shield. The flicker of panic in her eyes faded, replaced by a cool, distant look.
James didn’t miss a single change in her expression. He saw the walls she built up. And underneath, he saw the scars she tried so hard to hide.
He swallowed, pushing back the questions that burned on his tongue.
Let it go.
If he pushed her, it would only hurt her more.
The sharp edge in his eyes faded, replaced by a helpless sort of tenderness. He sat up, moving away from her.
“Come on, let’s get up and get ready.”
James got out of bed and headed out. Since they weren’t sleeping in the master bedroom, they needed to go back there to use the bathroom.
Emmy lay there for a moment, staring up at the ceiling. Eventually, she got up and followed him.
When she reached the master suite, James was brushing his teeth at the sink. She didn’t go in. Instead, she leaned on the doorframe, arms crossed, just quietly waiting.
When he finished and stepped out, she spoke in a casual tone.
“The New Year’s coming up in a couple weeks. How about we stay at my mom’s for a while?”
She nodded towards the vanity as she spoke. She still needed to keep the bug planted there to catch the person behind it. But if they kept avoiding the master bedroom, it would start to look suspicious.
James understood, and whatever tension was left seemed to melt away. He crossed over to her, wrapped his arm around her waist, and pulled her close.
“You’re right. It’s almost the holidays. We should spend time with your mom.”
“I’ll go pack up. After I drop you off, I’ll head over to the station.”
He pressed a kiss to her lips before heading to the closet to start packing their things.
Emmy watched his broad back, a little smile curving her lips. She turned and went into the bathroom to get ready.
Soon enough, they arrived at Moonlight Bay.
