Emmy couldn’t help but feel a mix of amusement and exasperation.
[It sucks. It really hurts.]
[How much? Worse than when you got hit with a whip?]
Reading that, Emmy’s chest tightened. She felt a wave of worry for her friend.
[Probably not that bad.]
Abriella sent back an “OK” emoji, then followed up with another message.
[Going to sleep now. Good night.]
Emmy fired off three question marks in the chat, but there was no reply. She held her phone, feeling a growing sense of unease. Was Abriella about to do something wild tonight?
Turns out, Emmy’s hunch was spot on.
Right then, Abriella was turning over an idea in her head. Not just any idea, but one that was crazy, bold, and a little bit terrifying.
After everything Will had done for her these past few days, the careful way he looked after her, she’d bounced back so fast it was almost unreal. She couldn’t remember ever being treated like this. Her heart felt like it was soaking in sunlight, warm and bubbling over with gratitude and something sweeter she didn’t want to name.
She needed an outlet for all those feelings, especially since Steve kept popping up every day with new snacks and drinks. She didn’t want to see him, didn’t want anything from him.
Will had shielded her from Steve’s persistence, taking the brunt of his attitude without ever letting it get to him. He was always calm, always steady, never letting a hint of annoyance show.
So that wild idea had been looping in her mind for two days now.
Earlier tonight, she’d even asked a female nurse to help her shower, making sure she was fresh and smelled nice from head to toe. She wanted to give herself completely to this gentle, thoughtful man before they even made things official.
After sending her last message to Emmy, Abriella quietly slipped out from under her blanket. She glanced at the small bed nearby.
Will lay there on his back, eyes closed, breathing slow and even. He looked fast asleep.
Just thinking about what she was about to do sent her heart racing, pounding so loud she was sure he could hear it. She bit her lip, forced herself to sit up, and threw the covers aside, ready to get out of bed.
Earlier that evening, she had suddenly asked him to go home and get his household booklet.
Will hadn’t questioned it, just did as she asked, but he’d noticed she’d been acting strange all night. She kept staring at him, zoning out, her cheeks turning pink. She’d insisted on turning off the lights early, saying she was tired, but then she’d hidden under the covers, texting away on her phone.
Will pushed aside his questions and nodded. “Yeah, I brought it. What do you need it for?”
Abriella held out her hand, determined. “Let me see it.”
Will took the booklet from his jacket pocket and handed it over.
Abriella opened it, but when she looked inside, she froze.
The main page and all the inner pages had just one name. Will.
She looked up at him, stunned. “Why is it just you in here?”
