Will jolted in surprise and shot up three fingers, swearing with all the seriousness in the world.
“I could never, ever stop loving you.”
He added, “And if we get married, it’s an official military marriage. As long as you don’t do something huge, even if I wanted a divorce, the military wouldn’t let me. So once you marry me, you’re stuck with me for life.”
Abriella couldn’t help but smile at his awkward but genuine promise. She leaned in and gave his chin a happy kiss.
“Well, then get up. Let’s go to the registry.”
Will’s brain lagged behind for a second.
He fumbled through getting dressed, then helped Abriella with her clothes too.
But when he saw fresh blood seeping through the loosened bandages on her back, guilt hit him hard.
He cursed himself for being so reckless the night before.
Why couldn’t he have just resisted?
While Abriella went to the bathroom, he started tidying up the bed.
When he pulled back the covers, his eyes caught a bright red stain near the bottom of the sheet.
It was way too low to have come from her back…
Suddenly he remembered what they’d done last night, and he just froze.
The bathroom door opened behind him.
He quickly bundled up the sheet, face burning.
“This… got dirty. I’ll go grab a clean one.”
They had to re-dress Abriella’s wounds.
The doctor took one look at the reopened stitches and immediately turned on Will.
“As her boyfriend, no matter how much you want her, you can’t just lose control like this.”
Abriella’s face went bright red, but she still tried to stick up for him, mumbling, “Doctor, it was my fault. I couldn’t help it.”
The doctor just stared at her, speechless.
Once her wounds were taken care of, they headed straight for the marriage registry.
When they came out, both of them were holding a little red book.
Will clutched his, still half-convinced this was all some kind of dream.
But Abriella dragged him to the residency office next.
She changed her official address to his and even had the staff issue her a brand new household record.
She wanted nothing more to do with the Sullivan family, not even on paper.
When they stepped back outside, tiny snowflakes were drifting down again.
Will flipped open the fresh folder, his thumb brushing over the new page again and again.
The snow seemed to fall even heavier, pure white flakes settling softly on their hair and shoulders.
The icy cold of the snow clashed with the heat of their lips.
His kiss was desperate, as if he wanted to absorb her into his very bones, never to be separated again.
Abriella rose up on her toes and kissed him back with just as much passion.
For a moment, the world seemed to stop. All that remained was the warmth of their breath and the faint sound of falling snow.
The kiss felt like a dream—beautiful and unreal.
…
They made their way back to the hospital, still riding the high of the morning, but as soon as they stepped out of the elevator, they ran into Mandy.
She looked a mess, with heavy dark circles under her eyes. The second she saw Abriella, she snapped, charging at her with a raised hand.
“Abriella, you bitch!”
She had clearly forgotten all the times Abriella had taken her down before.
But this time, before Abriella could even react, Will stepped between them.
He caught Mandy’s wrist and shoved her back hard.
His eyes were icy, his whole presence radiating that intimidating, unmistakable military aura.
“What do you think you’re doing?”
