Abriella finally managed to slip out of his arms. She sat up with a quick, sure movement and pulled off her hospital gown without a second thought.
There were still bandages wrapped around parts of her back. From the front, the sight wasn’t exactly flattering.
She looked Will straight in the eye, totally unbothered, and teased, “You’re not grossed out by me, are you?”
Will swallowed hard, his gaze glued to her. “No way,” he blurted. “I… I can’t get enough of you.”
That answer made Abriella grin. She flopped back down on his chest, her hands tracing his muscles like she couldn’t help herself.
“Then hurry up,” she whispered, playful and impatient. “The night won’t wait forever…”
Before she could finish, Will pulled her close, rolled them over in one smooth motion, and gently settled above her.
The movement tugged at her wounds, sending a sharp twinge through her back.
Abriella clenched her jaw and pushed through the pain, already reaching for Will’s waistband, eager and unstoppable.
Will caught her hand, his voice rough and shaky. “We… don’t have any protection.”
A sly spark flashed in Abriella’s eyes. “Even better. If I get pregnant, we’ll just have the baby.”
“I’ll give you twins,” Will shot back, his restraint hanging by a thread.
That was it. The last thing holding him back snapped. He kissed her hard, desire finally overruling every ounce of self-control.
He might not have had much formal experience, but he definitely wasn’t clueless. Locker room talk with his teammates had covered plenty, but actually doing it was a whole different story, messy and full of surprises.
When they finally came together, Abriella’s expression twisted. She couldn’t stop her nails from raking down Will’s back, leaving behind deep, red marks.
The pain was blinding, all-consuming. For a second, her mind went totally blank except for one thought.
This hurts way more than a whip ever could.
Emmy, you liar.
…
Meanwhile, at the detective agency, Steve sat behind his oversized desk, an expensive pen twirling between his fingers as he edited a case file.
For some reason, he pressed a little too hard.
With a quiet snap, the pen tip tore straight through the thick paper, leaving a deep, ugly slash of ink across everything.
He scowled, frustration creasing his brow.
Out of nowhere, a wave of worry crashed over him, twisting his stomach tight.
That night, he even had the weirdest dream.
In the dream, he and Abriella were married.
But the nurse told him Abriella and Will were already gone.
…
What Steve didn’t know was that, at the same time he was dreaming, Abriella had the exact same dream.
The moment she saw the divorce papers in her sleep, she woke up with a start.
But unlike Steve, who was shaken and lost, the first thing Abriella saw was Will’s sleeping face.
She was curled up in his arms, both of them tangled together, skin to skin.
All that panic and heartbreak from her dream started to melt away as soon as she breathed in his familiar scent.
She lay there, dazed, for a few moments.
Will stirred beside her and opened his eyes. Maybe he was thinking about the wildness of the night before, because his ears turned red and he looked away, awkward and shy.
“Are… are your wounds okay?” he asked, voice still rough with sleep.
Abriella didn’t answer right away. She lifted her head and looked at him, her expression suddenly serious.
“Will, if you ever stop loving me, would you divorce me?”
