Ivy had been there his whole life, watching him grow up, watching his love story with Emmy unfold. When he called off the engagement, Ivy was the only one who kept asking if maybe there was some misunderstanding between them.
He was the fool. He was so sure of himself, so harsh with his words. He broke Emmy’s heart and hurt Ivy too.
Now Ivy was in the emergency room, all because he hadn’t thought things through, because he’d let Claudia trick him yet again.
Dean’s face grew darker. Claudia, twisted in pain, clung to Ben’s arm, desperate to defend herself.
“I didn’t… Ben, I swear I didn’t…”
“Why would I ever tell Evelina to do something like that… Ah, it hurts…”
She screamed suddenly, the pain in her lower belly so sharp she nearly blacked out.
The butler pointed at the floor beneath her, voice trembling with fear. “Sir, Madam is… she’s bleeding.”
Ben looked down, eyes wide with shock. Under the hem of Claudia’s expensive black dress, a dark red stain was spreading, soaking into the carpet. The sight was terrifying.
Ben’s pupils narrowed. He scooped up Claudia, who was nearly unconscious, and rushed out. As he passed Dean, he stopped for a second, fixing him with a cold stare.
“If anything happens to your mother, you’ll answer to me.”
Everyone in the study rushed after Ben. Suddenly, the room that had been filled with chaos was silent. All the anger and madness seemed to drain out of Dean. He leaned against the wall and let out a low, broken laugh. As he laughed, his eyes turned red, and tears rolled down his face before he even noticed.
After a long time, he pulled out his phone with shaking hands. The screen was still open to his chat with Emmy. His fingers hovered for a while, then he finally typed three words and sent them.
I’m sorry.
A few minutes later, his screen lit up. He opened the message right away.
It wasn’t forgiveness or blame. It was a phone number and one cold line, completely emotionless.
If you need anything in the future, contact my husband.
He started to type, wanting to ask if she was serious, but as soon as he hit send, his heart dropped. A big red exclamation mark popped up.
She’d blocked him. Again.
Dean clutched his phone, pain written all over his face. What happened to being friends? Couldn’t they even be friends anymore?
Sixteen weeks… Four months. Twins.
She actually sent him this as a birthday present?
Dean felt like someone had reached into his chest and squeezed his heart until it nearly stopped. Even breathing tasted like blood and rust.
The babies obviously weren’t his. She still hated him. How could she not?
Last time around, she went through so much just to have a child. All those treatments, the endless needles, the secret tears. He’d known it all.
But he was the one who crushed her hopes with his own hands.
This time, she finally got what she wanted. She was pregnant, with twins.
She must be happy now, right? Stroking her belly, getting the nursery ready, picturing her future with that man, heart full of hope.
Just imagining it made Dean’s chest ache so much he could barely breathe. He pressed a hand to his heart, his tall frame bending as he coughed and gasped for air.
That single sheet of paper felt heavier than anything he’d ever held, pressing down on him until he nearly broke.
