“Mr. Sparrow, are you okay? Do you need me to call an ambulance?” The assistant’s voice trembled with panic as she hurried to steady him.
Dean couldn’t get a single word out. The pain was too much. All he could do was clutch the report in his fist, knuckles white.
In his eyes, agony churned, settling slowly into something dark and obsessive. He took his time, forcing himself to breathe, each exhale curling into the air like frost. When he finally looked down at the paper again, he straightened up, his voice raw and uneven.
“Find out for me… did anything happen to her this time?”
The assistant didn’t waste a second. She rushed off and returned quickly, almost out of breath. “Mr. Sparrow, Ms. Eincoln is fine. Just some scrapes on her hand. The baby’s okay too.”
Some of the tension left Dean’s shoulders. For a moment, he looked like he might collapse.
The assistant hesitated, then lowered her voice. “Also… I heard Ms. White had a miscarriage. She was almost two months along.”
Dean’s eyes went wide, the shock washing over him. A few seconds passed, then a strange, low laugh slipped from his lips.
It started soft, but grew louder and louder, turning wild and unhinged. He laughed so hard that tears spilled down his cheeks.
Karma. This was karma.
Carefully, Dean folded the test report, tucking it into the inside pocket of his jacket, right over his heart.
He turned and walked toward his car, his steps suddenly steady.
“Let’s go. To the office.”
“This year, everyone at the company gets double their year-end bonus.”
…
Private hospital, VIP ward.
“Aah!” Claudia’s scream ripped through the air, sharp and desperate as she stared at the miscarriage diagnosis in her hand.
She swept everything off the bedside table. The vase, the water glass, her phone… all crashed to the floor, shattering in a messy heap.
“My baby… my baby…” Her voice broke as she sobbed. She grabbed anything within reach and hurled it across the room. The once neat hospital room was now completely wrecked.
Dean. She wanted to kill him. She really wanted to kill him.
No one understood how much this child meant to her.
After giving birth to Evelina, her body had been damaged. Every pregnancy since had ended in loss. The doctors told her she shouldn’t try again, and in her grief, she got an IUD. If she hadn’t been so desperate to give Ben a son, to take Dean’s place for good, she never would have risked removing it at forty, betting everything on this one last chance.
She thought fate was finally on her side.
The baby came so suddenly. Now it was gone, just as fast.
She had put everything on the line, and Dean had kicked it all apart, leaving her with nothing.
As dusk settled, the red light above the operating room finally went out.
Ivy was wheeled out, pale and still, tubes everywhere. The thick white blanket over her legs lay flat, the empty space beneath it impossible to ignore.
She was moved straight to the ICU.
Back at Moonlight Bay, Emmy felt like her soul had been ripped out. She dropped onto the sofa, and almost immediately, a fever hit her hard.
The heat made her delirious, her mind slipping away.
Suddenly, everything felt like déjà vu, as if she had fallen back into her previous life.
That night had been freezing cold.
She remembered Dean’s call. He told her Ivy’s family had been in a terrible car accident on their way to visit relatives. All four of them were in the hospital.
He told her Ivy was hurt the worst. To protect her kids, she had gotten trapped in the twisted wreck, her legs crushed.
He told her the doctors did everything they could, but they had no choice but to amputate.
Memories of her past life and the pain of her present twisted together inside her head.
Ivy’s fate… once again, nothing had changed.
