Dumped My Cheating Ex. Now I'm Sleeping Next to a Billionaire CEO novel Chapter 678

James was completely thrown off.

He rushed to explain, “I wasn’t trying to mess with you. I just… I didn’t know how to be honest about who I am.”

“I messed up, babe. I should’ve told you everything sooner.”

Emmy’s mind was spinning. She didn’t want to hear any of his excuses or apologies.

She rolled over, turning her back to him.

“I just want to be alone for a while.”

James stared at her, his chest tight with pain. He reached out, wanting to touch her, but stopped himself.

“Alright. I won’t bother you.”

“But please, try not to be upset, okay? The doctor said you fainted because you got too worked up, and that stressed the babies. If you keep getting upset… it’s not good for them.”

He had never thought keeping his secret would hurt her this much, or put their children at risk.

He always imagined he’d tell her when the time felt right, when it was safest.

But in her eyes, all that careful planning just turned into lies and betrayal.

Watching Emmy ignore him completely, James felt lost and helpless.

He set the insulated food container on the little table by her bed and said quietly, “I brought your favorite food. Try to eat it while it’s still warm.”

He left the room, glancing back again and again as he went.

The door closed softly behind him.

Emmy didn’t want to cry.

But she couldn’t stop the tears from sliding down her face, soaking her pillow in seconds.

She knew it was the hormones making her so emotional.

So she let herself go. She buried her face in the pillow and sobbed.

Memories flashed through her mind.

She remembered all the times she tiptoed around Mr. Nelson, trying to figure him out.

She remembered lying in James’s arms, complaining about how impossible and intimidating Mr. Nelson was.

She’d even asked James outright if he was Mr. Nelson, or if he had anything to do with the powerful Nelson family.

He had denied everything.

All those careful moves, all those cautious questions. Did she just look ridiculous to him? Like a fool, trying to play a game she never even understood?

She hated this. Hated being lied to, hated feeling like she was just a toy in someone else’s hands.

The probe moved over Emmy’s stomach, filling the room with a soft, static sound.

Then, clear as anything, came the strong, steady rhythm of a heartbeat.

Thump thump. Thump thump.

It went on and on, the most comforting sound Emmy had ever heard.

All the tension drained out of her, and new tears welled up, blurring her vision.

Eorelei glanced at the healthy heartbeat on the screen and let out a sigh.

“You have to let them sleep at some point, you know.”

“Is it really worth crying this much over something so small?”

Emmy didn’t answer. She just listened to those two tiny hearts beating strong and sure, as if she could listen forever.

Eorelei’s gaze drifted to the faint red mark still on Emmy’s cheek, and her brows creased.

“Who did this to you?”

Emmy still didn’t say anything. All she could think about was her babies.

“Before I fainted, my stomach hurt so much. Are they really okay?”
