“You had a bit of a scare, but once you finish the IV and get some rest, you’ll be fine. Try not to get so upset in the future.”
Eorelei paused, her gaze lingering on Emmy’s pale face. “The world outside is messy enough. Don’t let your heart turn into a battlefield too.”
“They can feel your emotions, you know. If you give them peace, they’ll give you strength.”
Emmy’s eyes burned again, tears threatening to spill over.
Eorelei sighed and handed her a tissue. “It’s wild to think someone who cries this much could create something as incredible as Infinity.”
“I was just starting to see you in a new light, but now I’m back to thinking you don’t deserve your husband.”
Emmy gripped the tissue, anger bubbling up again. She shot back without thinking, “You’re right. I don’t.”
“If you want him so badly, why don’t you go after him yourself?”
Eorelei blinked, then quirked an eyebrow. “Did you two have a fight?”
Emmy didn’t answer. She just stared at the monitor, watching the lines pulse up and down.
“He spoils you so much, and you two still fight?” Eorelei shook her head in disbelief. “Don’t make a scene.”
She hesitated, then added, “But with your hormones being all over the place right now, you probably can’t help it. Go ahead and fight. It’s not like you two could ever really break up.”
Emmy let out a cold laugh. “Isn’t that what you’re hoping for? If we split up, you’d finally have your chance.”
Eorelei actually smiled. “But could you two ever really split up?”
She stepped closer, leaned in, and lowered her voice. “Or, you could cheat. That Dean guy who keeps chasing after you isn’t bad. If you have an affair and James agrees, then you could get a divorce.”
Emmy shot her a frosty glare.
Eorelei just straightened, glancing at the clock. “Your monitoring time is up.”
She reached for the machine, but Emmy cut her off, her voice sharp. “I’ll turn it off myself.”
Eorelei froze, then looked at her for a long moment.
“Try to work things out with him, okay?”
“If you could build something like Infinity, you’re more than good enough for him.”
Then she turned and left the room.
Emmy just sat there, stunned. She never expected Eorelei to say something like that.
What Emmy didn’t know was that Eorelei used to be a field medic. She understood better than anyone that the people out saving lives every day were always racing against death. Emmy’s Infinity system meant their chances of survival were higher, that more friends could be pulled back from the brink.
When she woke up again, the room was dim, only a single lamp glowing on the wall.
Someone familiar was sitting by the bed, just watching her quietly.
James had changed out of his firefighter uniform. He was wearing a soft gray cashmere sweater.
But as soon as Emmy saw him, her chest tightened. It felt heavy, almost suffocating.
She didn’t want to talk to him.
The IV was gone from the back of her hand, replaced by a tiny cotton pad and a strip of tape.
She pulled back the covers and got out of bed, heading for the bathroom.
James stood up right away and reached out to steady her. “Careful. Let me help.”
Emmy brushed his hand away, her voice cold. “Mr. Nelson, please keep your distance.”
James was silent.
Emmy walked herself into the bathroom.
When she came out again, she stopped in her tracks, completely stunned by what she saw.
