Emmy closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and finally tapped to answer.
Abriella’s voice burst through right away, shaky and worried.
“Emmy? What’s going on? Why did you send me that creepy emoji? I almost had a heart attack!”
“Abriella.” Emmy’s words came out flat and cold, nothing like her usual self. “We’re done. Our friendship is over.”
“…What?” Abriella was stunned, her brain scrambling to catch up.
“Go hang out with Mr. Nelson from now on. Don’t come looking for me.”
That tone—there was no way Emmy was joking. Abriella’s heart dropped.
“What are you talking about? Emmy, seriously, what happened? Don’t do this, you’re scaring me!”
Emmy gave a bitter little smile, lips curling in a way that hurt more than anything.
“Ask your beloved James.”
She hung up, not waiting for a reply, then tossed her phone aside.
Staring up at the ceiling, Emmy lay back, the light above twisting into strange shapes. For a second it felt like she was back in her old nightmares. Memories she’d tried to bury came clawing back. The lies, the secrets, the betrayals. Her husband hiding things from her, her best friend in on it, both of them making her the butt of their private joke. She was always the last to know, always the fool everyone laughed at.
Anger and heartbreak crashed through her, building until her chest felt tight, her breathing shaky. Then a sudden ache in her stomach snapped her back. Emmy gasped, panic cutting through the haze. She placed both hands over her belly, stroking gently, trying to calm herself.
“I’m so sorry, baby. Mommy shouldn’t be this upset.”
“It’s Daddy’s fault… We don’t have to forgive him, okay? From now on, let’s just ignore him together.”
…
Meanwhile, Abriella sat frozen, Emmy’s words echoing in her ears.
Mr. Nelson? James?
No way. Emmy couldn’t have found out… could she?
Fingers trembling, Abriella opened her chat with James.
[James, what’s up with Emmy? She told me to ask you.]
The reply came back almost instantly.
[She knows who I really am.]
Abriella’s vision went fuzzy. Her phone nearly slipped out of her hands.
“It’s your captain’s fault!” Abriella huffed. “I’m getting punished just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time!”
Will froze, suddenly alert. “Did they get in a fight?”
“This is way worse than a fight.” Abriella looked utterly defeated. “I’m an innocent bystander! Honestly, if I’d known this would happen, I never would have tried to find out so much. The more you know, the worse it gets.”
She barely finished the sentence before she saw Will shrug off his pajamas and dig through the closet for tomorrow’s clothes. He changed faster than she’d ever seen.
“I have to go to the station.”
Abriella blinked. “Right now?”
“Yeah.” Will’s face was all business. “If James is in a bad mood, we’ll all get extra drills tomorrow. I’d better get ready.”
He leaned down, kissed her forehead, and headed out. “Get some sleep. I’ll be back later.”
Abriella stared at the door after it closed.
Well. Looks like she wasn’t the only one suffering when those two had a fight.
Oddly, that made her feel a little better.
But the thought of Emmy really cutting her off made her stomach twist with worry all over again.
