Dumped My Cheating Ex. Now I'm Sleeping Next to a Billionaire CEO novel Chapter 683

Early the next morning, as soon as the bedroom door swung open, James was already there waiting. He stood tall in the hallway, still wearing an apron, a breakfast tray balanced in one hand. His eyes were careful, almost hopeful.

“I made breakfast. There’s pumpkin oat soup, those corn sushi rolls you like, and sea salt pastries.”

Before he could say anything more, Emmy’s pale hand reached out from behind the door, dragging a suitcase behind her. The smile on James’s face faded in an instant.

Emmy didn’t look at him. She pushed past, pulling the suitcase along, her face completely unreadable.

James reacted without thinking. He grabbed the handle of the suitcase, panic flickering in his eyes. “Emmy, what are you doing?”

She stopped and stared down at his hand. “Let go.”

“I’m not letting go.”

He held on tighter, his voice small and stubborn, almost childlike in his desperation.

Emmy finally looked up at him. Her almond-shaped eyes, usually warm, were now cold and sharp. “Let go.”

He didn’t move.

She tugged at the suitcase, but he wouldn’t budge. After a second’s pause, she leaned down and bit his hand, hard. James sucked in a sharp breath, pain etched across his face, but he still wouldn’t let go.

Emmy tasted blood in her mouth before she finally released him. Red bite marks bloomed on the back of his hand, tiny beads of blood forming along the edge.

Still, he refused to let go.

Emmy gave a humorless smile and simply let go of the handle herself. It didn’t matter. The suitcase was just filled with clothes and toiletries anyway.

Her face was still swollen. There was no way she could go back to Moonlight Bay and risk her mom seeing her like this. She owned a few places around the city, but none were really ready to live in. A hotel would have to do for now, at least until her face healed and she could face her family again.

She didn’t give James another glance as she headed for the entryway.

“Emmy!” His voice was raw.

Emmy put on her hat, her scarf, and finally a mask, then opened the door and stepped into the hallway. A few bodyguards were already waiting outside, standing at attention.

She walked straight to the elevator.

James followed her to the elevator doors. He didn’t say anything, just stood there, his broad shoulders casting a long, lonely shadow in the morning light.

Emmy never looked back.

Even the bodyguards seemed to feel sorry for James, the man who usually seemed invincible, now looking completely lost.

The elevator doors slid closed, shutting him out. James stared at the narrow gap until it disappeared.

Only then did he turn away, walking back into the empty apartment. He looked at the breakfast he’d made, now cold and untouched, and the ache in his chest only grew.

He grabbed his jacket, ready to leave, but at the last second he turned back, walked over to the living room, and picked up the abandoned suitcase.
