The Nelson family.
They were the real deal, sitting right at the top of the social pyramid. Even if you put three Drennon families together, they wouldn’t come close to reaching their level.
Teresa was just as shocked as everyone else. She stared at the golden invitation in her hands, completely floored.
“Are you sure you’ve got the right place?” she asked, her voice a little unsteady.
The butler just smiled politely, all composure and confidence.
“The invitation is for you, Teresa.”
“Please, accept it.”
He held out the invitation again, his presence so commanding that the Drennon family’s old butler didn’t dare hesitate. He hurried forward, accepted it with both hands like it was made of glass, and handed it to Teresa with great care.
As Teresa took it, her fingers brushed over the rich, silky card stock. Her heart skipped a beat. She undid the gold braided cord and opened the invitation. Inside, the words were written in bold, sweeping calligraphy.
This was the kind of invitation reserved for only the most important occasions.
She had lived half her life and never dreamed she’d ever hold something like this.
Her name was written right there, clear as day. The time was set for three o’clock that afternoon.
Teresa drew a steadying breath, looked up at the butler, and her usual gentle, gracious expression returned.
“Please tell your madam I’ll be there on time.”
The butler finally nodded, satisfied, then turned and left with his group.
The moment he was gone, it felt like the heavy air that had settled over the whole courtyard finally lifted. Everyone let out a long, relieved sigh.
As soon as the butler’s footsteps faded, the relatives who had been frozen in place just seconds before suddenly rushed around Teresa.
“Oh my gosh, Teresa! How do you even know someone like Mrs. Nelson?”
“Seriously! That’s the Nelson family! People like us aren’t even worthy to carry their shoes!”
One of her cousins’ wives stared at the invitation in Teresa’s hand, her eyes practically bulging with envy.
“Wait… is that real gold on the invitation? Just this card alone must be worth tens of thousands!”
With that, everyone’s eyes grew even hotter.
In an instant, her relatives switched from gossip mode to full-on strategy mode, even more anxious than Teresa herself.
Five hours later.
When Teresa finally walked out, the entire living room went quiet.
She wore a misty gray silk dress embroidered with delicate twin lotuses along the hem. Over her shoulders was a soft, cloud-like shawl. Her hair was pulled up into a graceful bun, held in place by a single, elegant hairpin.
She looked like someone who had just stepped out of an old painting. Poised, gentle, and stunning.
The old butler stared at her, completely dazzled, and whispered, “Madam, you look beautiful.”
Teresa didn’t waste a second. She headed straight to the Nelson family estate.
The car drove for ages along a heavily guarded road in the heart of the city before finally stopping in front of a breathtaking mansion.
Even the crimson front gate was more than ten feet high, set with eighty-one brass studs. Two massive stone lions flanked the entrance, carved so lifelike they seemed to watch every move, warning visitors to keep their distance.
The high walls shut out the outside world. Inside, it was all solemn grandeur, just like an ancient palace.
Teresa handed over her invitation. Another butler greeted her respectfully and led her inside.
