Lorelei was already waiting outside the ER when they arrived at the hospital. She’d gotten the call early and moved fast. The check-in, the tests, the IV drip—everything happened in a blur. As soon as Emmy’s condition stabilized, Lorelei took her straight to a VIP room.
“The patient needs total rest. No one’s allowed to disturb her,” she announced.
Even Teresa got ushered out without a hint of sympathy. She glanced at Lorelei’s cool, unreadable face, her nerves twisting tighter with every second.
Abriella hurried over and grabbed her arm, speaking softly, “Auntie, please don’t worry.”
“I checked around. Dr. Hall was a top army doctor, and now she’s Emmy’s personal physician. With her here, Emmy and the baby are going to be fine.”
Abriella almost added that Dr. Hall was under strict orders from the head of the Nelson family—she was in charge of Emmy and the baby, and if anything went wrong, she’d pay the price. Lorelei wouldn’t dare mess around.
But she couldn’t say that. Teresa’s patience with the Nelson family was already paper thin. Bringing them up would only make things worse.
A little while later, the sound of hurried footsteps echoed down the hall.
James showed up.
He was in regular clothes, but he looked nothing like himself. His eyes were bloodshot, hair all over the place, and his jaw was covered in dark stubble. Somehow, the mess only made him look more intense, rugged, heartbreakingly handsome.
Teresa barely recognized him at first. But as he came closer, she snapped out of it. Her voice was icy as she stopped him. “What are you doing here?”
James froze, looking at her. His voice was rough. “Mom, I just want to see Emmy.”
“Don’t call me Mom!”
“I’m not fit to be your mother, and Emmy isn’t fit to be your wife!”
“You don’t need to see her anymore. I’ll get the divorce papers drafted as soon as possible. This marriage is over.”
James just stood there, staring at her, pain and disbelief all over his face.
Abriella darted over, tugging his arm. “James, come with me for a second.”
She pulled him out to the balcony and quickly filled him in—everything from the Nelson family’s gifts, to Teresa’s outburst, to how Emmy got so upset it put her pregnancy at risk.
She looked up at him, urgent and pleading. “James, you love Emmy, don’t you?”
“You didn’t marry her just because she could have kids easily, right?”
At that moment, the door opened and Lorelei stepped out.
Teresa hurried to her. “Dr. Hall, how is my daughter? Is the baby okay?”
Lorelei glanced at James before answering. “Her emotions were too unstable. It triggered a complication with the pregnancy.”
“She needs to stay in the hospital for a few days, rest in bed, and avoid any more stress.”
Teresa nodded over and over, then slipped into the room.
James stopped at the door but didn’t go in. He just pushed the door open a crack. Emmy was lying in bed, face pale, even her dreams clouded with worry.
One look and James’s eyes filled with raw guilt and pain. He squeezed his fists, then turned and walked away, fast and silent.
Abriella stayed outside, leaning against the wall, her heart aching for all of them.
She knew it wasn’t just Teresa’s harsh words that had broken Emmy. It was everything she’d told her too. James’s heavy, heartbreaking past. Emmy had just started to accept all his scars, and then his family turned around and used her in the cruelest way.
That kind of pain could break anyone.
