“In love?”
Teresa let out a cold laugh, her gaze locked on Emmy’s puffy, red-rimmed eyes.
“Are you really in love with him?”
The question caught Emmy off guard. She hesitated, then nodded and stepped closer.
“Mom, what’s going on? Why are you saying this all of a sudden?”
Teresa’s hand shook as she pointed at the table covered in glittering jewelry. Her voice trembled with anger.
“Do you even realize what the Nelson family is doing? They’re staring at your stomach, and trying to buy my two grandchildren with all this shiny junk.”
Just a few days ago, Teresa had been humiliated at a tea party at the Nelson estate. Furious, she’d left their precious emerald jewelry set at their door. She thought that would make a statement, but Mrs. Nelson twisted it, acting like Teresa was greedy, like she wanted more.
So today, the Nelson family’s butler showed up again, this time with ten times more jewelry and even the deed to a private island. Before he left, he looked her straight in the eye and said,
“Mrs. Drennon, our madam says this is the kind of fortune that could make any family rich. Take the hint. Don’t push your luck.”
It was clear. The Nelsons never saw her daughter as family, and they definitely didn’t see Teresa as anything close to a real relative.
To them, Emmy was just a means to an end. A tool, nothing more, good for producing a proper heir. And Teresa was just the woman waiting to sell that tool to the highest bidder.
Teresa’s anger flared. Her eyes were red as she stared at Emmy.
“He’s been playing you from the very start.”
“Emmy, James only cares that you’re easy to get pregnant. All he wants are those twins growing inside you.”
Her voice broke, rough with heartbreak.
“The Nelson family never planned to let you marry in. They only want the babies. They already picked out a perfect Mrs. Nelson for him, someone from a powerful family who can help his career. You’re just a paid surrogate in their eyes.”
“When the babies are born, they’ll take them. They’ll throw all this money at us to make us go away. We might never even get to see the kids again.”
“To them, we’re just the lucky family James picked out, the ones who hit the jackpot. We’re supposed to be grateful for their money, then get tossed aside like garbage.”
Seeing her daughter like that, Teresa’s heart almost stopped. Her voice broke as she shouted, “Call an ambulance! Hurry!”
The sound of the siren tore through the quiet night at Moonlight Bay.
Emmy was carried out on a stretcher, Teresa rushing after her.
Inside the ambulance, Teresa held Emmy’s icy hand, watching her daughter curl up in pain. Guilt and fear crashed over her in waves.
She’d let her anger get the best of her.
How could she dump all these brutal truths on Emmy when she was already so fragile?
But if she hadn’t said anything… if she’d let the Nelsons take the babies after they were born, that pain would have destroyed Emmy completely.
Teresa clenched her jaw, her heart pounding with one desperate prayer.
Please, let Emmy and her babies be alright.
