Shelly stared at him, stunned, her eyes filling with tears.
“James… how could you say that? I’m your mother!”
“Mother?” James let out a cold laugh, like he’d just heard the most ridiculous thing in the world. His lips curled, but there wasn’t a hint of warmth.
“You hit my wife. The head of the Nelson family punished you, you sent an apology gift, and I was willing to let it go.”
His voice suddenly turned sharp, burning with a fury that threatened to destroy everything.
“But you didn’t stop. You actually thought you could decide things for me and used those things to humiliate my family.”
“Starting now, every fund, trust, and unlimited black card you control from the Nelson Corporation is frozen.”
The color drained from Shelly’s face in an instant.
Without all that, how was she supposed to keep her place among the other socialites? How could she invite friends over for tea? When the new season’s luxury goods dropped, she wouldn’t even be able to buy them. She’d be nothing but a matriarch in name, with nothing behind it.
She pointed at James, her hand shaking in anger. “You… you’d do this to your own mother, just for some outsider?”
“She’s not an outsider,” James said, stepping forward. The force of his presence nearly knocked the air out of Shelly.
“Emmy is my family.”
“You’ve let that woman turn your head. You don’t even remember your own name anymore,” Shelly spat.
James just looked at her, his eyes cold as ice.
“Listen carefully.”
“As long as you don’t admit what you’ve done wrong, as long as my wife and my mother-in-law don’t forgive you, as long as they refuse to accept the Nelson family because of you, I won’t step foot in this house again.”
“And what I’ve taken from you today, you’ll never get back.”
He turned and walked out, each step showing just how unshakeable he was.
Shelly stood frozen for a moment, then hurried after him, not even caring when her coat slipped off and hit the floor.
“James!”
She called out, her voice breaking. “Don’t go. Stay and have dinner with me, just once. Please?”
She sounded so careful, almost begging.
“And Emmy! Sure, she’s capable, I’ll give her that, but there’s something weird going on between her and the CEO of Sparrow Group. A woman like that has no place in the Nelson family.”
When Shelly found out Emmy was her daughter-in-law, she immediately hired a private investigator to look into Emmy and the Drennon family.
She’d never respected a small family like the Drennons.
But at least Emmy was likely to have children. That was one thing she could accept. The Nelson family needed an heir.
But just being able to have kids was nowhere near enough to marry into the Nelson family. The matriarch had to be like her—born into a top family, able to bring real connections, not some pile of messy baggage.
The servant winced from her grip but just bowed her head and quietly said, “Ma’am, it’s windy. Let’s go inside.”
Shelly’s chest felt tight with anger and frustration. She shoved the servant away.
“Go get Cadence for me.”
Cadence was her best friend, and right now Shelly needed someone—anyone—to vent to.
But the servant rushed out, only to come running back a moment later, face pale.
“Ma’am… something terrible just happened.”
