“Of course not.”
She paused and looked at Abriella, her gaze serious. “If you’re really not busy, why don’t you stay with me today? Let’s just talk for a while.”
Abriella’s face instantly lit up. She looped her arms through Emmy’s and snuggled in close.
“Yes, absolutely! I’ll keep you company until the end of time!”
Her attention dropped to Emmy’s noticeably round belly, and she couldn’t help but gently pat it.
“Wow, I swear it’s gotten bigger again. You’re growing super fast these days.”
She leaned in, lowering her voice a little. “Are you uncomfortable at all?”
Emmy settled back against the headboard, her expression softening.
“Other than getting hungry every two seconds, running to the bathroom all the time, and not being able to bend over, I’m fine.”
Abriella let out a dramatic sigh. “Pregnancy is wild, and you’ve got two in there. I honestly can’t imagine how you’re going to survive the last few months.”
Emmy didn’t answer that. She’d always been the type to take things as they came. No matter how rough the road, she could grit her teeth and push through.
The room went quiet for a moment, and then Emmy asked, “Abriella, do you know much about Mrs. Nelson?”
Abriella blinked in surprise.
She hadn’t expected Emmy to bring her up.
But the fact that Emmy was asking meant she was ready to face things instead of just getting swept up in her feelings.
“I guess... I know a bit.”
Abriella took a moment to gather her thoughts.
“Mrs. Nelson’s real name is Shelly. She’s actually the oldest daughter of the Sullivan family. She was born under a lucky sign, and she’s got a twin brother.
Back then, my grandma’s side—the Winston family—ran into a huge problem, so they adopted Shelly and changed her last name from Sullivan to Winston. The weird part is, as soon as her name changed, things totally turned around for the Winstons.
So Shelly grew up being treated like a walking good-luck charm by all the big families. No wonder she ended up so proud and looks down on everyone.”
“The only real setback she’s had was marrying into the Nelson family and having twins. But even then, her place in that family is untouchable.”
Abriella’s voice dropped.
Abriella grinned. “She’s got a ridiculous number of siblings!”
“My grandma had ten kids! Two sets of fraternal twins, a set of identical twin girls, three more sons, and one more daughter. My dad’s number seven in the lineup.”
Emmy was speechless.
Ten?
How is that even possible?
Abriella caught her shocked look and burst out laughing.
“There wasn’t any family planning back then. People just had as many kids as they wanted.”
“Plus, there were no phones or TV at night. Once it got dark, there was nothing else to do but make babies.”
She added, pretending to be serious, “I’ve even heard of a family with eighteen kids. Now that’s what I call impressive.”
Emmy just stared, feeling like her entire worldview had been flipped upside down.
“So... are all her siblings still alive?”
