Isabel was trapped in her own world, shaking so hard her whole body trembled. Tyler’s heart ached for her. He leaned down, gathering every bit of strength he had to pull her off the floor and into his arms, holding her close.
“Isabel, breathe. Just listen to me. Try to stop thinking about it for now, okay…”
Maybe it was the warmth of his hug, or maybe she just needed something to hold onto, because after a while, her trembling started to ease. It took her a long time to realize she was in Tyler’s arms. The second it hit her, she went rigid, then pulled away as quickly as she could.
“Sorry. I lost it for a second.”
Tyler’s arms felt suddenly empty, the last of her warmth fading like it had never been there. Disappointment flickered in his eyes and his hand tightened on the armrest of his wheelchair until his knuckles went white.
“It’s okay,” he said, barely letting any emotion show. “As long as you’re feeling a little better.”
Isabel didn’t say anything for a while. When she finally looked up, her eyes were red and swollen, but her voice was steady, every word pressed out with effort.
“Tell me… where is his grave?”
Tyler met her broken but determined gaze, his throat tightening. “I’ll take you.”
They drove out to a private clifftop on the edge of the city. The wind was wild up there, and only one lonely headstone stood at the edge, facing the sparkling lights below. The sky was clear, the city’s towers sharp and bright in the distance. The tallest building in sight was the Nelson Corporation headquarters.
Tyler wheeled up and stopped just a few feet from the grave. He nodded toward the stone.
“That’s Jamie’s.”
Isabel froze. For a moment, she couldn’t move. Then, step by step, she forced herself forward. When she saw Jamie’s name carved into the cold stone, her strength broke. She fell to her knees, reaching out with shaking hands to trace the letters she’d whispered for years. The dam inside her finally burst.
“Jamie… Jamie…”
She didn’t try to hold back anymore. Her cries ripped through the quiet, each one raw and desperate, pouring out ten years of waiting, ten years of pain, ten years of love. Her grief filled the air, heavy enough to shatter anyone listening.
Isabel gave a tired, almost bitter smile. Suddenly, she asked, “Don’t you hate James?”
Tyler blinked, caught off guard. “Why would I hate him?”
“Why?” Isabel’s laugh was sharp and sad. “If he hadn’t come back, Jamie would still be alive.”
Tyler stiffened, his eyes wide. Did she remember?
Almost like she could hear his thoughts, Isabel nodded. “Yes. I remember everything now. For years, every time I thought about the day Jamie died, my head would hurt so much I thought it would split open. Everything was a blur, like a nightmare I couldn’t wake up from. But now, I remember.”
Her hands gripped the bedsheet so tightly her knuckles turned white.
“It was James. He’s the one who killed Jamie.”
