Tyler’s brow creased. “This isn’t his fault. Jamie’s death was a horrible accident. He’s hurting too, and he’s been trying to make things right.”
“In pain?” Isabel let out a cold laugh. “He deserves every second of it. He should spend his whole life paying for what he did.”
Her voice started to shake as her anger built. “But look at him. He’s moved on, married someone else, started a family… He even announced it to everyone using Jamie’s name. Like nothing ever happened. I won’t let him get away with that.”
She drew in a shaky breath, her eyes wild and desperate as she stared at Tyler. “I’m still going to marry him. That title, being his wife, should belong to me. Tyler, you have to help me.”
Tyler set his soup bowl aside and looked at her, his face suddenly serious. “Isabel, you know he’s not Jamie. He has his own family now. If you keep pushing like this, you’re only hurting yourself.”
“I don’t care,” Isabel shouted. “I want revenge. I want Jamie to see that James doesn’t deserve a happy family, that he shouldn’t get to be happy at all.”
She grabbed Tyler’s sleeve, her voice breaking with desperation. “Please, Tyler, just help me one last time. I’m begging you.”
No one else knew that the last time she tried to get close to James, it was Tyler who helped her. James’s self-control was unbelievable. Even after being drugged, he’d snapped out of it and stormed off in anger. If not for that, Isabel would have gotten exactly what she wanted.
But this time, Tyler’s eyes were cold and distant. “You’re not thinking straight. Come back to me when you finally calm down.”
He pulled her hand off his sleeve, spun his wheelchair around, and left the room.
…
Emmy had no idea that Isabel had gone from a lovesick admirer to someone completely consumed by revenge. Right now, Emmy was pacing slowly around her hospital room, her baggy patient gown brushing against her knees as she walked. Her mind was racing with plans.
He knew that pulling off an agricultural project would look great for anyone’s political record.
“No. This one’s about charity. I’ve been thinking of developing AI-powered prosthetic limbs, especially for people with leg injuries. The proposal’s still in progress, but once I figure out the details, I’ll get started on the system right away. After that, I’ll do everything I can to keep production costs low and sell the prosthetics at cost to people who need them. Government support would really help.”
Dean was quiet for a moment. He understood she was doing this for Ivy. The project might not bring huge political rewards immediately, but Emmy was finally willing to work with him. That was a big deal. If he could help her now, there would be more chances to collaborate in the future.
“Alright,” Dean replied. “Send me the proposal once it’s ready. I’ll push for tier-two support.”
When the call ended, Emmy stayed still, tapping her phone against her chin, her eyes thoughtful and distant.
In her previous life, Jared had been a good leader. He ran the country well and always played fair. But this time, she couldn’t read him at all. If he stopped being fair and started making things hard for her just because of personal feelings… she really needed to start thinking about her own backup plan, for herself and for the baby she was carrying.
