Dumped My Cheating Ex. Now I'm Sleeping Next to a Billionaire CEO novel Chapter 724

Night had settled in. The hospital room was quiet, with only a soft, golden lamp casting a warm glow over everything.

When Teresa walked in, her face looked stormy. Emmy was sitting up in bed, reading, but the moment she saw her mother, she slipped in her bookmark and set the book aside.

“Mom, what’s wrong?”

Teresa sat down on the edge of the bed, trying to keep her voice steady. “I finally got to the bottom of that jewelry mess.”

Emmy just listened, calm and patient.

“It turns out, a diamond brooch really did go missing. But it wasn’t any of our staff. It was someone who came with the Nelson family’s butler, and they took it while everyone was busy counting things. Then they had the nerve to blame it on one of our maids, like it was the Drennon family’s fault.”

She shook her head, clearly still angry. “The Nelson family’s butler did fire the person who stole it, and he even apologized to me. But I just can’t stand it. Do you really think a servant would have the guts to steal something Mrs. Nelson wanted back, unless she told them to do it?”

Emmy didn’t react much. She even let out a little laugh.

“Honestly, I don’t think Mrs. Nelson is all that clever. She’s just been spoiled for too long, so she thinks everyone will just do what she wants. Framing someone like this is honestly embarrassing to talk about.”

Emmy paused, then spoke in a calm, steady voice.

“Mom, you shouldn’t be upset. No matter if it was her idea or not, she’s the one who looks bad in the end. This isn’t our family’s problem anymore. Actually, this gives us a bit of leverage. No matter how powerful the Nelsons are, they still care about their reputation. If anyone from their family tries something again, you can remind them about this. Don’t feel like you owe them any favors. If you need to send them away, just do it.”

Emmy looked up at her mother, as if she was trying to convince both of them. “Mom, I just can’t believe he planned all of that, just to use me. He has such an important life, so many things to deal with every day. I don’t think he’d waste all that time and effort on someone as ordinary as me. I’d rather believe he has his own reasons for everything.”

Teresa listened, her eyes already red with tears.

She realized Emmy was right. How could she have forgotten? After Emmy’s engagement with the Sparrow family fell apart, she’d spent so many nights wide awake, terrified that her daughter’s life was ruined and she’d never find a good husband. Then, out of nowhere, James and Emmy had gotten married. Every time Teresa saw James, he seemed so calm, so dependable. If the Nelson family’s young master just wanted someone to have his child, why would he ever choose Emmy, especially when she was at her lowest point?

It all made sense. But when Teresa thought about the Nelson family and how complicated they were, her heart ached all over again.

“But the Nelsons are such an old, powerful family. Mrs. Nelson never liked us to begin with, and even if she did accept you one day, having a mother-in-law like her wouldn’t make for an easy life.”
