Emmy stayed silent.
James’s eyes were red, so red they almost looked like they could bleed. He spoke again. “This is all my fault. I never should have dragged you… into this mess with the Nelson family.”
Emmy tried to calm the storm of emotions swirling inside her. She took a deep breath, but her voice came out rough and scratchy. “So who did you want to drag down with you, then?”
James stiffened, then answered right away. “Anyone. Anyone but you.”
Emmy let out a laugh. There was a hint of bitterness in it, and something cold, too. “I thought we’d both finally gotten a grip on reality these last few days.”
She pried his fingers off her one by one, forcing his hands away from her waist. James froze, his arms hanging in the air. Emmy turned toward him. Her eyes were swollen and red from crying, but her gaze was sharp, clear, and almost frightening.
“Abriella told me everything. And your mother’s actions… they made your intentions crystal clear.” Her hand came to rest on her pregnant belly. Her eyes grew even colder. “I get that you had your reasons, but you were planning for this baby from the start. Whether you were using me or actually cared… it doesn’t matter. I’m not forgiving you.”
James’s eyes lost their light, going dull and empty, like a candle snuffed out by a gust of wind. But Emmy kept going, and her next words made him freeze.
“But I’m not divorcing you, either.”
His eyes flared, a sudden flicker of hope lighting up his face. He stared at her, not sure he’d heard right.
Emmy kept her voice steady. “I lost our marriage certificate ages ago. If we want to divorce, I’d have to get a new one first, and I really don’t feel like hauling my pregnant self down to city hall. I’m too tired.”
She paused, meeting his eyes. “Besides, you messed up my life enough. I’m not letting you go wreck someone else’s.”
James tasted the salt of it on her lips. His kiss softened, turning gentle as he pressed his mouth to the corner of her eye, kissing away her tears.
That brought Emmy back to herself. She shoved him away, hard.
“Maybe this isn’t enough to make me divorce you,” she said, breathing hard, eyes red and shining, voice cold as ice. “But I will settle up with you. Every single thing. As for the Nelson family drama, you can handle that on your own.”
She looked him straight in the eye, slow and clear. “From now until I give birth, I don’t want to see you.”
The hope and warmth drained from James’s face. He stared at her, stunned. “What?”
