Emmy’s voice was cold and flat. “I don’t want to see you again. Did you hear me?”
James swallowed hard. Instead of backing off, he stepped even closer. His voice was rough, full of desperation.
“Then who’s going to put lotion on your belly at night?”
“Who’s going to rub your legs when you get those cramps?”
“Who’s going to make you something to eat when you get hungry at three in the morning?”
“Who’s going to help you put on your socks and tie your shoes when you can’t bend down?”
“Who’s going to walk you to the bathroom when you have to go in the middle of the night?”
With every question, Emmy’s frown deepened. Her eyes turned red, tears threatening to fall.
She couldn’t deny it. She wanted James to stay. She wanted to be cared for, to feel that warmth and tenderness that was his alone to give.
But she couldn’t let herself be selfish. She couldn’t risk her children’s future for her own moment of weakness. She had to keep her kids close, and she couldn’t give the Nelsons any chance to take them away.
James saw her look down, one hand gently resting on her belly. The sight of her, so fragile yet so determined, made everything suddenly clear to him.
His words got caught in his throat. He didn’t try to argue anymore.
“Alright.” The word sounded like it took everything out of him.
“I’ll leave someone here for you. She’ll take good care of you when I’m gone. You can trust her.”
Emmy pressed her lips together and didn’t say no. That was all the agreement he was going to get.
She looked up at him. “And whatever I do from now on, I need you to stay out of it.”
James’s brow creased. He knew she wasn’t just talking about resting and waiting for the babies.
He pulled her close again, holding her tight, his chin resting on her head. His voice was thick with worry he couldn’t hide.
“Just… be careful, okay? I’ll always have your back.”
Abriella tiptoed over, keeping her voice soft. “Emmy… how did it go with James?”
Downstairs, James’s tall figure walked out of the hospital building. He suddenly stopped and turned, looking up at Emmy’s window.
The glass was one-way, so he couldn’t see her, but Emmy still flinched and stepped back, as if she felt his eyes on her.
Abriella followed Emmy’s gaze, just in time to see James look away and disappear down the street.
She turned back to Emmy and said, “He’s gone.”
Emmy moved back to the window, staring in the direction he’d left. She let out a quiet breath. “Not great.”
Abriella wanted to ask more, but Emmy clearly wasn’t in the mood to talk. She just stood there, silent, gazing out the window.
Abriella felt a pang of disappointment and even more worry.
Would those two ever work things out?
