At that moment, there was a gentle knock on the door. Two clear taps, perfectly timed, not too soft or too forceful.
Emmy turned around and saw a woman walk in. She looked to be just over forty, dressed in understated clothes that somehow made her look even more put together. Her hair was pulled back in a tidy bun, not a strand out of place. She didn’t smile, but her eyes were steady and gave off a calm confidence.
She came straight over to Emmy, gave a respectful little bow, and handed her a thick folder with both hands.
“Good afternoon, ma’am. My name is Lorraine. I’m a top-tier maternity care specialist. Starting today, I’ll be in charge of your daily care.”
Emmy took the folder, still a bit surprised, and flipped through a few pages. Her eyes widened. Lorraine. She was the star expert from Serene Care International, the luxury health brand under Nelson Corporation. Every page listed another impressive milestone in Lorraine’s twenty-year career, clients who were all high society women from the Capital, each with a perfect record of healthy mothers and safe babies.
There was a stack of certificates attached, too. Senior nutritionist, postpartum recovery specialist, psychological counselor… Every credential someone could want during pregnancy, Lorraine had it.
Emmy closed the folder, said nothing, and handed it back with a quiet, “Thanks.”
Lorraine clearly knew her boundaries. After taking the folder, she quietly started clearing away the insulated lunch boxes James had brought, straightened up the bed, and made everything look neat, all without making a sound. When she finished, she stepped outside to wait, making sure not to disturb Emmy at all.
But even from the hallway, Lorraine’s professionalism showed. The instant before Emmy even realized her mouth was dry, Lorraine would appear with a glass of perfectly warm water. When Emmy needed the bathroom, Lorraine would remind her and help her up. If Emmy’s stomach growled, a plate of her favorite fruit or a dainty snack would already be waiting on the bedside table.
She was flawless at her job.
As the sun started dipping lower, the hallway outside got noisy again. More visitors had arrived for Emmy. This time, it was Abriella’s parents, with Mandy trailing behind, looking like she’d rather be anywhere else.
Abriella pulled her hands back right away, her expression icy. “Didn’t you come to see Emmy? You’ve seen that she’s fine. Now you can go.”
Mr. Sullivan looked over at Emmy, lying in the hospital bed, guilt written all over his face. “Emmy, what happened at our house last time… That was my fault. I’m so sorry. You were right. Abriella is our daughter. Her mother and I have thought a lot about what we’ve done wrong…”
Emmy cut him off. “Mr. Sullivan, you don’t need to say this to me. I’m just an outsider. If you’re really sorry and understand your mistakes, the person you owe an apology to is Abriella.”
Mr. Sullivan’s words stumbled. He finally turned to Abriella, looking awkward. “Abriella, you’re right. I shouldn’t have been so harsh with you. Honestly, when I hit you, it hurt me more than it hurt you…”
Abriella let out a sharp laugh, full of disbelief. “It hurt you? Then why didn’t you keel over from the pain while you were beating me half to death?”
