Emmy had been ready for this.
She gave a half-truth, her voice light. “I had a nightmare last night. In my dream, your parents just collapsed and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t wake them up.”
“When I woke up, I felt so uneasy, like something bad was going to happen. That’s why I called you. I never expected… that it really would.”
Abriella sucked in a sharp breath.
“Wait, are you saying your twins sent you a warning dream?” She sounded half-joking, half in awe.
“They really are lucky babies. If you hadn’t called me last night, if we hadn’t gotten there in time, my parents… they might not have made it out of that villa.”
Abriella was getting more and more worked up. “Emmy, you saved my parents’ lives. When they wake up, I’m telling them everything.”
“Don’t.” Emmy cut her off right away. “The one who really risked everything for them was Will. It wasn’t me.”
Her tone shifted, growing serious.
“Abriella, you need to look into what really caused the fire.”
“A gas leak in the kitchen? That feels way too convenient.”
“Check the gas inspection records for your place. See if anything looks off, like someone tampered with it.”
“And most important, when exactly did Mandy leave last night? Where did she go? Does anyone know, or have proof of where she was?”
After hanging up, Emmy leaned back against her headboard, her eyes thoughtful and distant.
In her last life, by this point she and Abriella had already grown apart because of Dean.
She only found out about the Sullivan family fire from the news. She rushed over, but only watched from a distance.
Later, some reports hinted that the fire had been set on purpose.
No one ever said who did it.
After that, she never saw Mandy again.
She couldn’t help thinking Mandy was involved, somehow.
Emmy pushed off her covers and got out of bed.
Dr. Hall came by to check on her, shared some tips for the second trimester, then told the nurse to get her discharge papers ready.
Emmy was about to ask Lorraine for help packing when someone knocked softly on the door.
Krystina hurried over, practically pressing her nose to the petals.
“I saw these in a top flower magazine once. They’re lab-made roses, right? They only grow like a hundred stems a year, and each one costs… a small fortune. And you have a whole bouquet? Oh my God.”
She shot Emmy a look, her eyes full of meaning. “Whoever sent these is either stupid rich, super powerful, or just… completely in love with you. Like, nothing in the world is good enough for you except these.”
Emmy stared at the blue roses, lost for a moment.
She could almost still feel the warmth of James holding her the day before, the way he kissed her, strong but apologetic, the memory lingering on her lips.
She didn’t explain, just mumbled, “A friend sent them.”
“A friend?” Krystina raised an eyebrow, drawing out the word. “Well, your ‘friend’ has excellent taste and apparently no limit on their credit card. Who wouldn’t fall for flowers like these?”
She turned away to help Lorraine pack.
While they were busy, Emmy slipped over to the bouquet and brushed her fingers against a blue petal.
She quickly pulled out a single rose, tucked it into the pages of her textbook, and held the book close to her chest.
When she looked up, she found herself face to face with a pair of big, curious eyes.
