Ollie blinked, staring at her without looking away for even a second.
Emmy smiled and lifted her finger to her lips, giving him a quiet “shhh.”
Ollie got it right away. He pressed his lips together, then pretended to zip them shut, nodding earnestly.
Krystina and Lorraine finished packing things up in no time.
Krystina walked over to the gorgeous bouquet and asked, “Emmy, what about these flowers? Should we take them?”
Emmy hugged her books, her voice calm.
“Just toss them.”
“What?!” Krystina’s voice shot up. “Throw them out? These must’ve cost a fortune, and you don’t even flinch?”
She looked honestly devastated. “What a waste. Every petal is basically cash.”
Emmy just smiled and didn’t say anything else.
They all headed for the elevator.
Ollie carried the sunflowers he’d brought for Emmy, practically skipping at the front of the group.
That insanely expensive bouquet of blue roses sat quietly by the trash next to the hospital room door.
The car didn’t go to Applewood Estate. Instead, it drove toward Moonlight Bay.
When Emmy got back to her family’s old house, her mother wasn’t there.
Krystina helped her carry things inside, explaining, “Your mom’s been really busy these days. She’s probably still at the lab.”
“The lab?” Emmy hadn’t expected her mom to dive in so fast.
“Yeah, she joined Mr. Aldridge’s Deep Blue research team.”
“That’s the top research team in the country. They work on some really important stuff! I can’t believe after all these years away from work, your mom just jumps back in and totally nails it!”
Emmy’s eyes softened. “She hasn’t worked officially for over twenty years, but she never stopped learning.”
A hint of pride crept into her words. “The concept behind the new DuoDuo smart home robot? That was her idea.”
“I know about that!” Krystina’s eyes lit up. “DuoDuo is the smartest, most versatile robot out there. Too bad it’s so expensive. If it was cheaper, I’d get one to help with the kids.”
Emmy hesitated. The price was definitely high—over twenty million for one—but with Krystina’s ability and job, it shouldn’t have been out of reach.
Emmy’s throat tightened.
She managed a soft “Yeah,” but inside, her emotions were all over the place.
She’d always thought Mrs. Nelson was confused, calling her by mistake. Only now did she realize that from the very beginning, that “granddaughter-in-law” had always been meant for her.
The old lady’s voice came again, half-complaining, half-playful.
“You haven’t visited this old woman in ages!”
“It’s all that brat’s fault. Every time he comes, he never brings you! I just smacked him with my cane again!”
“Next time, I’ll make him bring you with him. You both have to come! The wild greens in my garden are growing like crazy. Grandma will make wild greens tacos for you, alright?”
Emmy’s heart suddenly felt both heavy and soft, like she could melt.
She lowered her voice. “Grandma, I’ve just been really busy lately. As soon as I have time, I’ll come see you.”
“So when will you be free?” The old lady jumped right in, sounding almost like a kid. “Are you free tomorrow?”
Meanwhile, outside the nursing home’s little courtyard, James stood quietly by the gate, having just been sent out.
