The old lady was still going on and on over the phone, not ready to give up.
“Busy tomorrow? What about the day after? Or the day after that? Are you really that busy every day?”
“My dear, are you working on something huge? Why are you never free?”
“Is that brat giving you a hard time? Tell me, I’ll smack him with my cane again!”
Whatever Emmy said in reply, it sent the old lady’s voice shooting up, all happy and excited.
“You’re free tomorrow? That’s perfect!”
“Make sure you come early. The wild greens are best in the morning. I’ll save the freshest ones for you. They’re delicious.”
When the call ended, the old lady kept holding her phone, her whole face crinkling into a bright, wrinkled smile.
James had been listening the whole time. His dark eyes were stormy, impossible to read. He didn’t stick around. He just took long, quick steps toward the gate.
“James. Hold on.”
He’d barely stepped outside when a calm, level voice called from behind.
James stopped, not bothering to look back, his impatience clear on his face.
A wheelchair rolled up beside him. Tyler sat in it, giving his brother a look of quiet exasperation. He held out a hand behind him, and the assistant handed over a folder.
Tyler offered it to James.
“It’s time for Grandma and Emmy to sign these.”
James didn’t look at him or reach for the folder. His voice was cold, clipped.
“Not yet.”
Tyler raised an eyebrow, his tone sharpening.
“Then when?”
“When Grandma’s so far gone she can’t remember her shares, or even how to sign her own name?”
He pushed the chair closer, almost nudging James’s leg.
“You’ve been ignoring my calls and texts for two days. You made me come find you in person.”
“You’re really willing to forget about our brother, just for this woman?”
“I won’t forget.” James’s voice was low, tense. “But Grandma’s doing fine right now. We can wait a few days.”
“A few days?” Tyler let out a short laugh. “The shares are right at our fingertips. Once we have them, we can finally get justice for our brother. You should be the one pushing hardest for this.”
He was convinced James had actually fallen for Emmy.
That must be why James never dared to tell her the real reason behind their marriage.
Their father had already arranged for the best doctors in the country to be on standby for Emmy, day and night, just to make sure she and the baby were safe.
Even if she found out the truth and got upset again, nothing would really happen.
But James was still using it as an excuse.
Tyler spun his wheelchair, eyes following James as he walked away.
He watched him climb into a white Bentley, a car that just didn’t fit his usual vibe.
Of course Tyler knew why. That car was a gift from Emmy.
There were better choices in the garage, like the mysterious Rolls-Royce Ghost or the tough G63.
But James only ever drove this one.
Tyler pressed his lips together, determination flashing in his eyes.
“Let’s go. Moonlight Bay.”
