James and Tyler froze, sitting up straight like they’d just been caught doing something wrong.
Emmy glanced at them, fork halfway to her mouth, unsure if she should keep eating.
“Don’t worry about them, sweetheart. You just eat.” Grandma’s voice softened in an instant, gentle and affectionate, the way she always was with her favorite granddaughter.
So Emmy picked up her fork again, taking careful, tiny bites, feeling every eye on her.
Only then did Grandma turn her focus back to her grandsons. Her tone was quiet but powerful, the kind that could shake mountains.
“Starting today, Emmy is part of this family, officially. She’s Mrs. Nelson now.”
“If anyone in the Nelson family has a problem with that, they can come talk to me. Directly.”
She looked from James to Tyler, her gaze sharp and unwavering. “As for you two, it’s your job to protect her. Did you hear me?”
“Yes, Grandma,” they answered at the same time, voices perfectly in sync.
“Especially you, James.” Her gaze landed on him, laser-focused.
“She’s your wife, yet you keep secrets from her. Is that how a husband should act?”
“You messed up. When you’re wrong, you admit it. Fix your attitude and apologize to your wife, properly.”
James sat up even straighter, his hand tight at his side, knuckles white.
He nodded. His voice was low, steady. “Yes, Grandma. I was wrong.”
Grandma shifted her attention to Tyler.
“And you, Tyler.”
Her words had that disappointed edge, like she expected better.
“It’s time you take your life seriously. Stop getting stuck in the past. If you never look ahead, how are you going to move forward?”
Tyler’s lashes fluttered. He answered quietly, “Yes, Grandma. I understand.”
While Grandma kept talking, Emmy suddenly felt a warm hand wrap around hers under the table.
At some point, James had reached across and was holding her hand, his grip firm and steady, like he had no intention of letting go.
Emmy’s heart skipped. The taco she’d just picked up slipped right back onto her plate.
She tried to stay cool, reaching calmly for another, but under the table she tugged at her hand, just a little.
